Hello everyone,
I was a long time bird lover and had experiences raising tonnes of birds including canaries, budgies, cockatiels, a ringneck and (the larger one) an African grey. My poor grey died of unknown reasons, he randomly started having seizures and becoming paralysed... Anyhow, I am a lot older and I want to get back into parrots as I purchased a very wide aviary on a farm a small drive from my house. I remember a lot of general and important information but have forgotten details about what bird species have what specific personality. I know i want a grey but would love birds with huge personalities, that are lots of good fun (basically ones that are extremely playful). I’m thinking of getting Galah, (the big too’s scare me). Any suggestions? If you want you can just talk about and recommend the personalities that could possibly suit. :)

In my opinion you would get whichever species you want because in the end you will be carrying for the parrot and there is nothing better than a parront who is enthusiastic to his/her fids:)

If your looking to get a cuddly bird, cockatiels and conures (depends on the bird) are generally medium-sized birds, that can also be playful. I don't have a lot of experience with bigger birds, but galahs are generally playful. I can depend on the individual bird though, no bird's personality is the same.

I purchased a very wide aviary
What size is it and what bar spacing? This will determine birds that can/cannot live inside it.

. I know i want a grey but would love birds with huge personalities, that are lots of good fun (basically ones that are extremely playful).
A lovebird would tick those boxes... :)

Hi Riyam, welcome! Am I understanding that you want to purchase several parrots that would live as a group in the aviary? You mention a large aviary a short distance from your house. Is the aviary coming to your home or would you be going to the avairy to care and visit with your aviary birds everyday at the farm?

:welcome2: Whichever bird you want to get may depend on what noise levels you can withstand.

I will be going there, the man who looks after all the animals also will be caring for their essentials (it’s my dads farm).

:welcome2:

Welcome! Would the bird live outside all the time or both inside and out?
outside at all times, the weather gets really hot in the desert which is my biggest issue, I’m thinking about how to keep them cool, maybe getting fans and sprinklers hmmm..

Whichever bird you want to get may depend on what noise levels you can withstand.
As the birds will be living outside (and nowhere near any neighbours) I presume noise will not be an issue, but if it is outrageously loud, like anything louder than a factory i’ll definitely have to think about.

and thanks to everyone welcoming me :)

Are you looking for just a single bird? Or a flock? Different species in the same place?

I would love to get both a grey and a galah, if I happen to absolutely love any other bird(s) then perhaps I would get them too. I hope putting them in the same aviary is a good idea, is it just me or is putting birds together more fun for us and the birds? I’m thinking of getting them young. Really hope they don’t fight and it encourages socialisation and stimulation.

I would only ever keep birds from the same places together. I have a mixed aviary with Budgies and various finch species. I had to remind my red rumps recently, as they attacked and killed one of my budgies just last week. In fact a week today.

I wouldn't keep a grey and a galah together. Not would I ever keep a large bird in an aviary with anything but it's own species.

If you are dead set on getting and African Grey, then that is really all you should have, unless you get another aviary or a cage at home for a different species.

Thanks, I’ll take note of that, and I really appreciate your honesty. If anyone else wants to add input about putting 2 species together I would love that.

It CAN be done and it IS done. As I said. I do it. It is soooo risky. I think that a grey and a galah could easily kill each other.

Sorry

Don’t apologise, I love learning and figuring out the best thing to do. I watched videos of popular bird owners such as Marlene and the parrot wizard put different species together and I assumed it was okay. But I want to put the birds first and know what is best for them.

Also, does anyone know if sand is okay for birds? The desert ground is all sand.

I apologised as you haven't done anything wrong and I gave you bad news, which I do enjoy doing :)

Everyone here (even those that joined way back in 2009) was once here to learn! Most members learn something new every day!!

Marlene Cohen and Parrot Wizard are two of the very worst, so called, experts to take any advice from. There are many other people who are tried and true experts, who will tell you the truth about birds.

This woman has made an extensive list of people who are competent to give accurate advice about parrots.

What is the outside temperature by you?
I regret to say summers can reach 106 degrees Fahrenheit. So before I get the birds I need to fix that issue. I thought sprinklers and continuous fans could help but still not sure, need to figure out what temperatures the birds can tolerate.
