Those shiny pianted shapes, made of wood
with cute animal & fruit shapes...
They looked suspicious to me, so I called the company this a.m.

The answers I got were shocking.
I asked:
Are the beads from China? Yes
Do you know what types of paints are used? No.
Do you test for lead? Yes. There is lead in the paint.
Do you know the lead content? No.
Why do you sell them for birds? It's up to the customers' discretion to use them or not.

Wow! I was more than a little shocked. Have dealt with them for many years, and expected better from them.

Please be very careful when buying toy making parts.
It really is Buyer Beware.

Yea for real. I'm returning all the painted beads to them. They should really put information on their website about it!

Yes true and I know who you called... I've never bought stuff like that from them because I did know all their stuff is from China or some of it anyway.

By the way, just plain ole food coloring on wood is best, no worries.
Yea, I tend to stick to natural woods, plastics and acrylics for the toys I make. I just hate that I have to get rid of those wood beads as Emma likes them so much. She just discovered she liked them too a few weeks ago. At least it was just a few weeks and not several years of her playing with them!

Thanks Doris for looking into this! You probably just saved a few of our fids from getting very sick or death.

I'm going to sticky this thread for easy reference. :)

True.
But I think of all the people who have no idea about this.....and the birds who also love them like Emma did, and what effect would years of lead exposure/ingestion have? I'm not a scientist or chemist, but it doesn't take a scientist to tell us that ANY amount of lead is not acceptable.

This company must either stop selling this un-safe crap, or post a warning.
Nothing riles me more than companies that care more about the almighty dollar than our birds' safety! Shame on them.

You are very welcome.
I have no clue if there is such thing as a "safe"
level of lead....but who in their right mind wants to experiment with a parrots' health and safety?

This just makes my blood boil - I wonder how long those beads have been available on their web site?

15-20 years ago, we used to see dozens of toys at pet stores, with those exact same beads.
And suddenly, they disappeared...only to return all these years later.

That's why I called the company - because it
surprised me to see these suspicious looking beads again after all these years.

:thankyou: Doris for pursuing this

does anyone have a pic of these items?

You're welcome.
Our birds safety must always come first.
This is just plain WRONG - when you consider how many consumers buy from them!!! Grrrrrrrrrr

Holy cow Doris! That was the answer they gave you? We have to make an informed decision? How does one go about that if they don't even tell you what it's made out of? Why in the world would anyone carry something that had anything toxic on it for birds, humans, whatever? I'm really saddened and kind of sick to my stomach over this. I do avoid anything with paint on it like that unless I've called to make sure, but how many people even think of doing that? All I can say is wow....
