There was 2 of these in my backyard today — they are have a white neck and belly, blue/black on the wings, black on their back as well as their head, plus a bit of white above their beak. They are beautiful whatever kind of bird they are! I hope they come back.

I only got one photo and then they both took off.

It looks like a kingfisher to me. Could it be a Forest Kingfisher?

Awesome, thank you all! I have never seen one around here before, I really do hope they come back — it looked like they were looking for a nest/had a nest, they were hanging around a tree with a large hole in it. :)

Ever since getting parrots, I am fascinated by all birds in general. I love sitting out and watching the birds now ... its so relaxing on a nice summer morning at the trailer :)

Earlier in the year (probably May or June) my husband and I were sitting out on our front porch enjoying a beautiful summer evening and we saw to Waxwings in the tree in front of our house. Here's a link to a picture: WAXWING photo - Kevin Fasken photos at pbase.com

We watched them over the course of several evenings work on building a nest. They were so interesting to watch. I'm not sure what happened, because they never actually laid any eggs in the nest so I was a little disappointed in that. But they were beautiful birds and so fascinating to watch them at work. Mother nature truely is a beautiful thing :D

Sorry about that.

Darn good try for a non-US bird Matt :D The Sacred and Forest Kingfishers are commonly mixed up - for me the difference was the range of the species.

Titanis taught me the Kingfisher and Kookaburra are in the same family! I would have said Kingfisher too. Cool pic!

Smithsonian Channel just had a great documentary on Kingfishers--I love this extra channel. Can't remember exactly what, but the PBS show Nature is going to have an interesting show next week ;)
