Hello all. My family and I have just started our first day with our newly adopted lovebird Sky. Sky is an older bird in his early twenties. He recently lost his fellow bird and cage mate when he passed way just yesterday. It was an accident. The other bird was not his mate, but they were very used to each other's company. His former owner and her family are not often at home and were not able to give Sky the attention and care he needed. They were especially concerned for him after his friend died. It was an accidental death, leaving poor Sky in the cage alone with him for hours.

He is now under our care at our house. We are taking it slow, so as not cause undue stress. He is a hand tamed bird, but is only just now getting to know us. His former owner taught him to get on her shoulder and to both say and give kisses. Thus, I know him already to be a talkative bird in good humor with a great deal of capabilities.

He seems to be doing well. He has be talkative, is eating, grooming regularly, and I can tell from his body language that so far he is adapting to his new situation well. I have never had a lovebird. I recently lost my pet cockatiel Sam, who died in his early thirties. Coackatiels are the only type of bird that I am knowledgeable about. I am looking to be able to get advice on care, training, and first and foremost helping Sky to transition to his new home and family. Any advice and feedback would be welcome.

Congratulations on getting Sky! I don't know about lovebirds in particular, but just take everything slow and go at his pace. You'll have to post pictures of your cute little guy!

Hello! I too recently adopted a senior lovebird. My girl was severely neglected and never learned to trust humans.
I've had great success getting her used to my hand by offering her a favorite treat outside the cage in my hand. She has a little table in front of her cage I set up foraging activities on for her so she associates that table with treats. I've learned lovebirds like greens over fruits, Kamara loves green beans and dandelion leaves.

She used to scream when I put my hand in the cage to give food, she doesn't anymore, she's learning the hand is a good thing. Every interaction with me or the hand is always on her terms, I don't want to force her into anything.

I have an 8 year old Lovebird. I've had her since she was about 8 months old and the original owner needed to find a new home for her. She is very lovable and tame still after all these years. They are such feisty little beings for their size! She loves to bathe in the water fountain I have set up for all three of my birds. They are so much fun. Enjoy your new birdie <3 Here's my girl bathing in the fountain.... TootieInFountain.jpg
