Hey!

For some relevant info please see my previous tread: Birdroom/giant aviary...ideas?

I'm wondering if there is anything species specific to think about when (if) you make a room into an enclosure for the little crazy buggers :D

Like...will they likely destroy more than I think, you know...being unsupervised and all? Do I need to protect stuff I haven't even considered?

If I would want some sort of furniture in there for their stuff...what would be a safe option?

Small birb, big beak and an enormous attitude equals that this might be more of a challenge ;) I mean normally I need to supervise them constantly when they're out of their cage.

Please help, anything to calm my nerves a bit would be appreciated. I feel that I need a solid plan if this goes through. I'd rather not be taken by surprise and have to panic to get it all done.

Ps. Also... thank goodness I haven't gotten any other species...as I have previously thought about, because that would have been a disaster. I live in an apartment, not a mansion. Ds.

I have a bird room but mine are only out when I am in there
Curtains is a thing to think about maybe ? Remi forever going behind them not sure what sex your birds are but could make them hormonal a nest place

Can you not have a cage at all ? I use my cages to hang things off attach stuff too

hubby made me a perch for wall piece of wood with a big perch screwed into

windows I hand stuff off curtain pole so they don’t hit the window

Thank you for answering. I haven't really thought about curtains... that's definitely something to have in mind. Wouldn't want them to get stuck or something. They're both boys so they might not be as prone to nesting though.

Safety around the actual window is something I hadn't really thought about either, so thanks for that reminder to. The risk of them panicking and flying in to the window is probably higher since they'll have constant access to it.

Wall perch is a great idea, definitely putting that on my list.

I believe I would be able to keep the cage as long as I remove a door or such (since you wouldn't be allowed to keep them in there). So I might keep it as a safe space for them (if they seem to want to still hang out in there). Still hoping to be able to keep my bedroom as is, but definitely need a plan for if this becomes reality.

I have a male and female who are 2.5 years old and they have their own room. Their main cage is actually four cages put together (with no backs) to form a 64“ x 38” cage. There is also a 5-sided cage in the corner of the room they can go into when they want. There are two windows in the room and both have platforms in front of them as wide as the window and about 18-20” wide. Each platform has rims on it so their toys don’t fall off so easily - but they always drop some over the edge anyway. They also have a manzanita tree next to one window next to the platform.

My birds have many places to go and toys to play with. I also play bird music for them (not really sure if that helps or not). I have had some problems with them chewing up door frames but I ended up lining them with duct tape and that put a stop to it. They have really chewed up the wooden window pane wood and I need to cover those with duct tape also — like I did to the windows downstairs where they are with me 3-5 hours a day. I have not had any problems with them with the curtains in their room, although they do climb on them quite a bit and have put some small holes in them (they are cheap anyway and I don’t care).

You basically have to deal with the problems when they crop up - like I have done with the door frames. It is a constant learning process..! Any electric cords you have showing should be covered - you can buy different electric wire covers at Amazon. I also have a video camera in their room so I can watch them while I am downstairs from time to time to be sure they are OK and haven’t gotten into trouble. One time, I noticed that one had gotten a circular plastic toy stuck over his head and the other bird was trying to help him get it off… Needless to say, no more of those kinds of toys…

Would it be possible for you to get one of those large walk-in aviary cages to put in the room, so that they can still have plenty of space without being able to access the walls and window? Like one of these:

Wishing you good luck with meeting the space requirements and getting everything set up.
