Just wondering if any of you macaw or too owners have any ideas on where to purchase or how to make large rope perches. I'm looking for one thicker than 1.5 inches in diameter to vary the perch size for my amazon. I realize that the big birds can destroy one in days, but I was hoping someone could give me some ideas.

I ordered a couple of 1.25" cotton rope perches from Mother Pluckin' Toys but they have shrunk massively, so I only got to use them once.

Thanks in advance!

Liz

You can always braid thinner ropes together to make nice thick ropes.

I buy hemp rope. It comes in thicknesses up to 3 inches. It's also nice and stiff so it's not so wobbly when they walk on it. Acts very similar to tree branches.

I order it from here. ----> Hemp rope

John, how do you fasten it to a cage or wall?

John, I love that rope!
What size is yours?
We have a U2 and a new tree perch.
I would love to drape the rope over it in several places!

Just placed an order over here for some hemp rope John, hope it is as good as what you have shown in your picture.
We are also finding it hard to get rope toys and when we do find them they are so expensive. When you know they are going to be eventually torn apart that is!

I use SS pipe clamps with a quick link. My rope is 2 5/8 inch. The rope is very tough and lasts for years.

Hey, great idea -- I contacted the company. They no longer carry the larger diameter ropes unless you have a really large order. Group buy?????

They made me buy a whole spool. That was a few years ago now!!

What do they consider a "large order"??

Manila rope "is" hemp rope.
Also named Abaca and Manilla Hemp. A member of the "hard" fiber group and is indigenous to the Philippines

Thanks John.
I did read that on one of the rope sites!

Can I verify again what size your rope is?

You said it was 2 5/8"
Does this mean when you take a tape measure and wrap it around the rope it is this much? (circumferance?)

Or is it diameter?

If I order some online I want to make sure I get it big enough around without it being too big.

And in no way would hubs let me buy a whole spool!
I did find a few sites where you could buy 2" and 3" rope by the foot which is probably what I would do.

Diameter. Being such large diameter there isn't that much on a spool. I estimate it was about 60 ft or so.

yea thats not very much at all!
Im going to scout around the Seattle area first before I buy online.
I can only imagine what the shipping costs are going to be and I assume that rope is heavy!

John has a good tip there with braiding thinner ropes to make a thick one - it has the added advantage of not weakening the whole rope/braid if they chew a piece of it

I found a pattern/instructions for a four strand round braid that is easy and turns out well.

Web Rigging Supply has been the cheapest that I could find in the larger diameters. Have not ordered from them yet, but need to!

It says on their website that the only thing their ropes are treated with is vegetable oil.
