Teaching wave

hello!
Tafari has learnt clicker-training, step-up (though still having issues with coming down from shoulders), in and out of the cage and a travel cage, and recently spin:flowgdnc:
My mum, within weeks of staying with me, taught them to headbob (which i wish they could unlearn, because they do it all the time!) Anyway, the next trick i wanted to teach was wave. The technique i was going to use was "ask for step up, click when one foot goes up and pull away before they get on your hand". The problem is, before Tafari steps up, they use their beak first. not usually biting hard, just to steady themselves. so the usual training technique won't work.
I had another idea while writing this: i could use a thin piece or wire, something they can't stand on, but would want to chew. They would use their beak to explore first, but i'm sure would eventually use their foot, and i could click and treat when the foot lifts. I'm not sure how i would change the trigger to a gesture, though!
Any suggestions are appreciated, photo for bird-tax purposes:

Hey so gorgeous

all of mine have learnt to wave even though they used their beaks first is he young ?
mine used their beaks while little then stop

ellieandthebirds on utube as a good video on teaching wave I just use the bits I like out of it

you want the finger action to be different from step up so step up is a straight finger I have my finger hooked for wave to start and I teach shake first so one foot on my hooked finger shake treat (I don’t use a clicker) then once shake is learnt I go to put my finger to them then treat when they lift one foot I then start changing my finger movement to a wave and start asking to wave instead of shake

@Pixiebeaks asked me to record a training trick video for her but it’s so hard to slow down the movement as mine know what I want already but I will post them for you

I was able to capture it as my bird lifted her foot and then shape it into a wave. Most birds will lift a foot in anticipation or excitement, and I captured that in order to be more hands off with getting the behavior started to avoid confusion with step up. Once that was reliable I started shaping it into more of a wave by selecting for a higher lift and even a bit of a wave motion. Videos are under training highlights. https://www.instagram.com/red.tail.bindi?igsh=OXB2MDRpNDlta3c4&utm_source=qr
