It's my sweet tiel's 34th hatch day! (I actually don't know the exact day. His former owner's daughter just said he was hatched in December, but this is the day we celebrate.) Yes, 34. A cockatiel. He's a sweet, sweet bird. He loves to hang out with everyone and gets very concerned when his entire flock- Scooter, Elvis, Howie and me- aren't in the room with him. Well, maybe not Elvis. LOL. And now, also our foster tiel Kumquat who I think he has a pretty big crush on. He loves to sing and eat. He doesn't like to come out of his cage a lot anymore but is very alert and happy.
For those of you who don't know, he was relinquished to the rescue I help with when his owner suffered a serious of strokes, and his owner's daughter lived in housing that didn't allow pets. (I suspect his owner died very shortly after he was relinquished.) Knowing that I have a soft spot for senior tiels, the adoption coordinator asked if I would "foster" him but because of his age- which was 30 at the time- they weren't going to adopt him out. He was just going to stay with me. Howie tried to talk me out of it. He said, what are you going to do when this bird dies in a few months? I said, I will cry but at least I will know that I gave him a good life for the time he had left. But I was nervous about getting him. I expected this frail little tiel who was going to be completely traumatized, etc. He was sitting on my shoulder singing from day one. He is a complete joy and 4 years later is going strong. The vet suspects he has some arthritis in his wings. So, he's on gabapentin but other than that is doing great. Somewhere along the line he stopped being a foster and became mine officially even though he was always going to stay with me. I love him so much and am hoping he has more happy years ahead of him. Happy Hatch Day Rosie!
