Pixie will be missed dearly. He passed away today Dec 21, 2021, most likely from a liver failure but waiting on final necropsy results. He was a super sweet bird. Would go to anyone I handed him to and never bite anyone. Neither him nor my other bird Kiwi ever squawk or scream. I had Pixie for 12 years after getting him from an unwanted home. I'm not sure of his true age. He has struggled with missing feathers and a growth on his preen gland that I have had removed twice, but otherwise seemed healthy until this last month or so where I noticed he was eating less, losing weight and slept more. He had bloodwork done just a few days ago and blood panel showed low uric acid and total protein indicating liver disease.

Thanks everyone. The necropsy came in, I'd like to think he just died from old age since it seemed like he had multiple issues between the lethargy lately, weight loss, low protein and uric acid. I'm so thankful for the time I got to spend with him and fear my other bird will be lonely now. After reading on this forum I feel like I got so lucky with my two birds and their behavior. They are both very social and well behaved, both with me and with strangers. They never scream and they both follow verbal commands such as 'go home' when it was time for them to return to their cage. I feel very sad for Kiwi who has lost his friend.

I finished the necropsy on Pixie this evening and it appears that the likely cause of death was a heart attack or stroke. There was significant fibrosis around the heart and enlargement and thickening of the great vessels. The walls of the atria also appeared very thin.
The liver looked small, which could result from chronic liver inflammation. The GI looked normal, and there was no evidence of any trauma.
