Little Penelope died today. There did not seem to be anything wrong with her, but I found her on the bottom of the cage a little while ago.
I was shopping at a Petco in November 2005 when one of the employees said they had a budgie for adoption. Shortly before that, Penelope had gotten injured and a vet had to amputate one of her toes. She was a tiny little thing, even for a budgie, but she survived and was healthy when I brought her home.
At the time, I decided not to isolate her from my other budgie (I only had 1 at the time) and she make friends with Aristotle immediately.
She was terrified of hands, so I just let her live her life as a bird. As my budgie flock grew, she flourished. Eventually she paired up with another one of my males, Pearl. Two years ago, she and another hen shared a nest and raised two chicks.
So, I'm not sad. Penelope had what seemed to be a very happy life. I buried her in my garden under a poplar tree. I think is is a nice place for her to be now.
These photos are from 2005, not too long after I brought her home.
