Alex has had a light clip for a few years now Becky. I remain concerned that such a clip will be detrimental if he ever needs to get altiture quickly to get out of a bad situation, but it has work for us for various reasons.
I am very conscious of the presence of wind and its direction and "speed". We don't go near the cliffs or too near the ocean on windy days. We spend a lot of time at the local park, which covers a large area and is fully fenced. We spend time in the center of the park, well away from the boundary.
Alex, since the first week after we got together, developed the habit of turning towards my chest, rather than flying off, when frightened. I wore a long beard then and when traveling on my forearm while outdoors, he would push his face into my beard. I no longer have the beard, but he still turns toward my chest when frightened (an old photo with the beard to give you some idea).
Initially, I trained for "return flight" and he responded very well, but at a point, people begun flying drones, which bothered him and afraid the drones could "chase" him off course and out to sea (we live on a narrow peninsula), begun to clip.
Many thanks for the lovely comments everyone.
