Our "Mayor of the Avenue" award is presented to a member who exhibits the qualities that distinguish them to be an upstanding credit to the Avenue, a loving, informed, conscientious and caring bird parront and an all around good neighbor.
I am happy to announce that Mark & Da Boyz is November's Mayor of the Month.
I enjoyed reading your interview, and am sure that everyone else will as well!
1. What kind of birds do you have (age, species and names)?
I have 2 Green Cheek Conures at this time. Cheddar, e’s 5 ½ now and I got him as a baby and BB a rehome and is about 13-14 years old now, I took as Cheddar was unhappy being alone.
2. What got you interested in birds?
A friend had a Tiel and I wanted a pet but not a dog or cat and fish are little more than a picture that move IMHO. So I got a Little Whiteface Tiel and named him Nibble. He was my bestest little buddy but I was forced to rehome him with a friend due to COPD. I do him him but he’s doinf great with her and I get reports all the time.
3. What have your birds brought to your life?
They are great company and while sometimes a pain in the neck they can also make for a good laugh at times.
4. What have you learned from sharing your life with your birds?
They rule the roost no matter what we think. I have learned to look out for them as they seem to be bent on ending up in trouble some times and I have to “Head ‘em off at the pass”. They are all different, Two GCC like Cheddar and BB can be as different as night and day. Cheddar is a wild child and BB is a laid back guy.
5. What's one birdie memory that will stay with you forever?
I had a Parrotlet, Streak for 13 years and he loved to sit on my thumb with mt fingers curled over his back and me scritching his head. He passed for cancer the week my mother passed, those were rough times.
6. Where is your birds main living area?
They have a shared room birdroom/ computer room. We spend most of our time in there. They will follow into the livingroom/diningroom or catch a ride into my bedroom as times. But for the most part they stay in their room.
7. Did you change things in your home to accommodate your birds and if so what kinds of things did you change?
As we remodeled the condo I’m in now before I moved in I made sure it was a bird safe as I could. No carpet, vinyl wood flooring to make it as easy to keep clean as I could. I had gotten rid of all the nonstick cookware I had years ago.
8. Are you involved in any kind of bird related group or activities?
Not at this time. There is no bird club in the Tampa area that I can find.
9. What is the one luxury item you would love to have for your bird(s)?
Outdoor Aviary...can’t do that in a condo though.
10. Is there any bird that you dream of owning and if so why?
CAG or TAG. But I won’t get one due to age and health.
11. Describe a typical day with you at home with your birds.
Get up around 7:45ish...they’d get me up at 6:00 if I let them. Get breakfast for us all. Let them out and they are out until about 11:000-12:00. Then they go in their cages and I get showered and go take care of things. When I get home I change back to “Bird Clothes” and let them out until about 6:00 when I out them in a cage, most of the time I get them both in BB’s cage, while I get their supper and fresh water. Lights out for Team Green is 7:00.
12. What have you learned about owning birds that you would like to share?
Before you get a bird do some research on they type of bird you are thinking of. I had the hots for a bird but after a little research I changed my mind, Seems the males can get nasty mean as they get older...not all just some. A little trading saved me from what could have been a bad choice.
13. If you knew then what you know now about birds, what would you do differently?
Likely have gotten another Parrotlet when Streak passed away. While I like and love Team Green they can get very noisy at times and Cheddar can bite like thumder at times...draws blood.
14. What other hobbies do you have?
Building computers, use to ride motorcycles but not in Tampa...crazy yes, stupid no! I keep house plants and Succulents out side. I do check on every plant I buy to be sure it’s “Bird Safe”.
15. Anything else you would like to share?
While I have found a nice bird store here I miss Sugarcreek Bird Farm and my friends there.
