Hello! I love birds and am still learning stuff everyday after probably 10 years of bird ownership. I have a budgie who prefers to stay in his cage and a female lovebird who flies free. I have had zebra finches for many years - adorable little birds.

Very recently I found eggs in my female lovebird's cage - which is common, except to my absolute shock - one was hatched!!!!!!!!!! The only conclusion we can come to is that she was inseminated by the budgie and it WORKED!

I have a beautiful little "lovebud" with iridescent blue and green colors. He/she is VERY healthy and sweet. He loves his mama and vice versa. We have searched the net everywhere and cannot find any instance of this actually happening until someone mentioned this site. Apparently there are other experiences of this and as I have just finished registering and need to get on with my job today, I will be perusing this site tonight!

We named the baby Mira for miracle! He/she was born April 21st and is one healthy little bird.

Still in shock................

Is the lovebird a new bird in your house? It is possible that she had mated with a lovebird before you purchased her.

I think these two birds have been only birds for 2 years, so it's probably parthenogenesis. :)

I have never heard of a case of it occurring in parrots.

It goes in order. Budgie Misha is blue, mom lovebitd is peachface and baby Mira is the last pic. How do I get my earlier FB pics on a thread here?

I've heard about it in at least two other lovebirds and a cockatiel. :) Birds are, after all, most closely related to reptiles, where-in there are documented cases of asexual/parthenogenesis occurring when the species doesn't normally reproduce that way.

If you can get the image URL from FB, you can insert it using the image icon (square box with two mountain peaks and a sun) or putting image tags around it. Photos may need to be public in order to share them, though.

I'm going to guess that the mother is split turquoise/white face and the baby picked up double chromosomes?

There is nothing to indicate this baby is a hybrid, which leads to this chick being born via asexual reproduction.
