My budgie is totally silent

Hi! This is my very first post here after having lurked on the site for quite some time :cool3:

I am slightly concerned about my new Budgie, Olive. I am a first time bird owner, and I’m not totally familiar with bird behavior yet. Olive is a very very very quiet bird. Every other budgie i’ve ever cared for or observed is a chatty little creature. Even if they aren’t talking, playing some noises of other birds will get them chirping. Nope. Not Olive.

All the reading I did about budgies before adopting her warned about how loud they can be and I was fully prepared constant squawking and squeaking, but she just sort of sits there. All quiet. She will only make any sort of noise if she needs help, like if she is stuck on something. It is very brief.

Is this normal?

Hello, Welcome

When did you bring her home?

This, and how old is she? Young/baby budgies chatter less, they become more vocal as they mature. My cricket was silent apart from contact calls until he hit about 10 months, now he constantly vocalises. Mavis was the same, but she was quieter than cricket

Hi! She's been with me for around 4 days now. She is roughly 1 1/2 to 2 years old.

They will often be very quiet and very still when they are still new to your home. Being silent means they are not drawing attention to themselves so they are more likely to stay safe. Give your new friend time to settle in and learn all the sounds and sights that come with this new environment they find themselves in and I am sure you will start to see more movement and hear more noise from your little buddy once they have settled in and start feeling more comfortable.

If she’s the bird in your photo, she’s a pretty girl. She just needs to be convinced that no one is going to eat her.

My female budgie isn't all that chatty. Her partner does all the chatting for her. She could also just be getting used to her environment.

There are already good answers here, so I just want to add that YouTube has many videos of budgie chatter. For "background noise". Maybe play a video that has two or three Budgies in it. Some of the louder aviary videos seem to startle our birds!

If I ever leave the house, I play that for her. She's still a quiet little bird. I hope she warms up soon.

My nearly silent boy has been screaming his head off today. Just wait. You may soon be surprised what a racket she can make.
