Our "Mayor of the Avenue" award is presented to a member who exhibits the qualities that distinguish them to be an upstanding credit to the Avenue, a loving, informed, conscientious and caring bird parront and an all around good neighbor.
I am happy to announce that Miss Annamarie is May's Mayor of the Month.
I enjoyed reading your interview, and am sure that everyone else will as well!
1. What kind of birds do you have (age, species and names)?
Eclectus, Basil, 2
Eclectus, Mel, 14ish
Blue and Gold Macaw, River, 16ish
Quaker, Marley, 9ish
Quaker, Lucky, 9ish
2. What got you interested in birds?
When I was 15ish, my great aunt was in a hospice-type nursing home situation. I couldn't handle being up in her room seeing her like that. I went downstairs to a little room and there was a cockatiel. He would dance and whistle at me and he cheered me up almost immediately. I hung out with him for hours and I still think about him to this day.
3. What have your birds brought to your life?
Birds have brought many things to my life. A kind of peace no other animal gives me as well as a companionship I've never experienced before. They make up my whole home and always will.
4. What have you learned from sharing your life with your birds?
A better understanding of myself. It's weird to say but I heavily relate to my birds.
5. What's one birdie memory that will stay with you forever?
The first time I met Mel. I walked into the store area of the rescue and she flew right to me! We've been BFFs ever since.
6. Where is your birds main living area?
Everywhere! River has her own room, but the main bird area is the livingroom. Mel just had her cage moved from my room to out there as well. But they come all over the house with us.
7. Did you change things in your home to accommodate your birds and if so what kinds of things did you change?
Definitely! Hiding cords, no more candles, different pans, space heaters, popcorn makers, etc.
8. Are you involved in any kind of bird related group or activities?
I volunteer at the bird rescue that's near my town!
9. What is the one luxury item you would love to have for your bird(s)?
I would love to build our deck into an aviary where we can just sit out with them every summer all day!
10. Is there any bird that you dream of owning and if so why?
My current dream is to just bond with another bird like I did Mel. Species doesn't matter!
11. Describe a typical day with you at home with your birds.
Everyday I wake up at 7:30am. I let Mel and Basil out right away. River doesn't usually want to get up until about 9 otherwise she is very agitated in the morning. I change everyone's water and start cutting fresh food for everyone. I give new pellets to River, Marley, and Lucky. I go spend about 2 hours in River's room just hanging out and then put Basil and Mel in their cages for awhile so River can come out since she doesn't do well with other birds. She loves to dance and sing for hours on your shoulder. We pretty much go back and forth giving them time out everyday, or if my dad is working from home River and Basil are back in his office and Mel is hanging out with me, Lucky, and Marley. Marley is usually on my chest throughout the day and Lucky is usually on my shoulder. I go to work 3 days out of the week at 3pm and my dad usually comes home at 4:30 to hang out with them. Everyone goes to bed at about 8 every night! Lots of treats and a couple training episodes throughout the day as well.
12. What have you learned about owning birds that you would like to share?
Patience is a virtue.
13. If you knew then what you know now about birds, what would you do differently?
I would have started making my own bird toys right away, it's saved me so much money in the longrun.
14. What other hobbies do you have?
Ukulele, singing, just started crocheting, video games, plants, and collecting squishmallows!
15. Anything else you would like to share?
To me a house isn't a home without a parrot!
