It's been a while since I had a budgie and what I provided as a cage back then is nothing like I would want to provide today. Thanks for clarifying. :) Not looking for a budgie right now, just thinking of Sylvia's.

Do you mean "maximum" bar spacing? :) I think it would be either 1/2" or 5/8". I've heard some people claim their budgies can stick their head through 5/8" though, so it depends on what size the budgies are.

I would never go more than 1/2" with a budgie.

I don't go above 1/2" :) They can really get themselves into trouble and squeeze into small spaces when they want to. Charles was like a little contortionist!

What about an English Budgie? They are bigger.
I have 1/2 in but when you see big cages they are usually 5/8 or more.

Charles was part English budgie but I still wouldn't have gone above 1/2" with him. He weighed around 42-45 grams. If a budgie were much bigger, and with a much bigger head in particular, than maybe-- but remember that English Budgies' heads often look bigger, but it's really mostly feathers and crest. They can still squeeze their heads in many places if they are curious enough...

I've seen some budgies really able to squeeze themselves into or out of some small spaces. I'd not be comfortable with more than 1/2"
