Our "Mayor of the Avenue" award is presented to a member who exhibits the qualities that distinguish them to be an upstanding credit to the Avenue, a loving, informed, conscientious and caring bird parront and an all around good neighbor.
I am happy to announce that Xoetix is March's Mayor of the Month.
I enjoyed reading your interview, and am sure that everyone else will as well!
1. What kind of birds do you have (age, species and names)?
Isadora - 16 year old female triton cockatoo
Tteok - 2 year old male cockatiel
Kimchi - 1 year old(ish) female cockatiel
Bug - 2 year old(ish, guessing) male GCC
2. What got you interested in birds?
My brother had a cockatiel while we were in high school that ended up picking me as his human, which I loved. After that, I always knew I’d want birds again eventually. About 5 years ago I’d put a deposit on an umbrella cockatoo baby, but then found out I was pregnant myself and knew that would be more than I could handle. It worked out well, because if I’d gone through with it, I’d never have gotten Isadora.
3. What have your birds brought to your life?
Insane happenstance, usually. Tteok is the only bird I’ve bought on purpose, everyone else I’ve just sort of found in different ways
4. What have you learned from sharing your life with your birds?
Not to take things too seriously. There’s not much that can’t be fixed with a little love. And screaming.
5. What's one birdie memory that will stay with you forever?
Realizing that Isadora trusted me completely. It was her first vet trip, she’d only been with me a few months at that point, and the vet remarked that he’d only seen an adopted cockatoo with as much trust as she had in me as one that had been with their owner for years. It took someone pointing it out to me to realize we’d bonded so well.
6. Where is your birds main living area?
They have their own bird room in the house, it’s great.
7. Did you change things in your home to accommodate your birds and if so what kinds of things did you change?
All of the ceiling fans are just decorative at this point. Other than that, there’s just been a lot of minor adjustments to make sure everyone is safe, like getting new pans and getting rid of candles and incense.
8. Are you involved in any kind of bird related group or activities?
Just here on AA I don’t know any bird people in real life.
9. What is the one luxury item you would love to have for your bird(s)?
Ideally - a great big outside aviary for nice days. Realistically - One of those massive atom ball swing perch things. They’re so expensive though!
10. Is there any bird that you dream of owning and if so why?
A galah. I’ve wanted one for years now, but they’re so hard to come by in my area. Their personalities are fantastic, they’re beautiful, and I think we’d mesh really well.
11. Describe a typical day with you at home with your birds.
I’m usually up around 5am to get everyone out for a few hours before I head to work, and then another couple hours after work. If I’m off, I’m out there around 6am and hanging out for a few hours before birdie nap time, which is when I do the human stuff (laundry and what not). There’s always a whole lot of cleaning, sweeping, poop-picking-up, etc
12. What have you learned about owning birds that you would like to share?
There are so many details you don’t really think about until you have birds. The pans you use, the cleaners you use, pet sitting if you leave for more than a day, candles, etc… there are so many aspects to keep in mind!
13. If you knew then what you know now about birds, what would you do differently?
I would have learned wood working ages ago. It would save a lot of money on toys!
14. What other hobbies do you have?
That implies I have time outside of work and birds and small child
I try to read when I can though, and am working on a paint by numbers kit.
15. Anything else you would like to share?
Not that I can think of! I’m just thrilled I found this page, it’s absolutely wonderful.
