Hi all,
My lovebird, Benz, who's been with me for eight years started having horrible seizures several months ago, completely out of the blue. Had him checked by an avian vet who said there's nothing wrong with him. What a frustrating event this visit was!
The seizures start with one wing going straight up in the air, then it progresses until he's on a full-on seizure with his little body convulsing, heart racing, neck stretched up and out, wings thrashing. It seems to start when he gets very excited or has overexerted himself. I try to scoop him up and hold him so that he's not wildly thrashing about. It stops after about a minute, sometimes sooner, but the trembling continues for half an hour. He then regains his composure, but is very weak, stumbling and losing his balance a lot. He's such a fighter, wanting to be active again shortly thereafter but can't quite muster the strength. He's also no longer sleeping on his perch but spends the nights now in his cardboard box on the cage floor. During the day, when he sits on my shoulder, I feel him trembling and his beak shuttering.
What can I do to help him????
I read to give him colloidal silver, which I have been doing now for a week: one drop in his drinking bowl each time I renew the water.
He's also not eating well and losing weight. He's never been a strong eater, though. He still tears into millet which I limit, his regular diet is pellets and apples. Much have I tried to offer him in terms of veggies and fruit, but he won't eat anything else.
I feel he is slowly but steadily declining to a state of no return, and it breaks my heart.
I don't know his age because he adopted Me, some eight years ago out on the tennis court one day and I've been his momma every since.
