Looking for help with one of my canaries

Hi Folks,

My name is Suzanne and I'm brand new to avian avenue.

I'm hoping to find some help and/or information on one of my canaries.

I adopted two canaries about three months ago. They're both males, about 3 years old, and I keep them in separate cages, but the cages are beside each other.
At first they were a little stressed and didn't do much of anything. Then they both started moulting so I didn't expect much from them.
Since they've finished moulting, one of my little guys has started chirping and trilling and all sorts of wonderful things. The problem is the second bird doesn't seem to want to sing.
Is there any information or advice that anyone can give me on how to get the second guy (Lolo) to start singing. Or is this silence something I just have to live with. I feel so bad for the little guy.

Help!!

Can't offer advice other than possibly trying to move them a little farther apart. I'm not sure on dominance or if that is a thing with them ?

Hi there I used to breed canaries so maybe you can put the other bird in a different room? Or perhaps its a hen?
If you put them together and you have a hen the male will usually stop singing

I’m guessing the quiet male is intimidated. The singing male has established his territory and the less dominant male has to be quiet and sneaky. I’d separate them (across the room first, then in another room) and see if he starts singing.

Good morning!
I cannot believe what a difference your suggestion made. Within seconds - SECONDS not minutes - they were both singing up a storm.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!:bliss:
Such a small thing - for you to reply - and you've made a world of difference.

Hello, sktruchan! I wanted to recommend the "Love of Pets" YouTube channel. She has a few canary videos.

If you are having a problem with your pet bird, it often helps to read about the natural history or life of the wild species. Then you can figure out what’s going on.

Use the internet archive/wayback machine to check out Robirda’s Canaries or hope @finchly is back.

To my knowledge, Love of Pets has never had canaries & is certainly not an expert by education or experience.
