Our "Mayor of the Avenue" award is presented to a member who exhibits the qualities that distinguish them to be an upstanding credit to the Avenue, a loving, informed, conscientious and caring bird parront and an all around good neighbor.
I am so delighted to announce Saroj as July's Mayor of the Avenue.
I loved your interview and enjoyed getting to know you a little better!
1. What kind of birds do you have (age, species and names)?
Seven birds
Jackson male or female green quaker parrot, 21 yo
JoJo (m), Chickie(f), 9 yo white bellied caiques
Emily (f) cinnamon pearl cockatiel, Little Scooter (m) green quaker parrot, both 8 yo.
Rudy African (m) red bellied parrot, 12 yo
Big Scooter (m), timneh African grey 19 yo
2. What got you interested in birds?
KFC
3. What have your birds brought to your life?
Times of joy. Times of worry. Times of wonder.
Times where my heart feels so full it might burst
4. What have you learned from sharing your life with your birds?
That birds can be demanding, messy, bratty and incredibly loving.
5. What's one birdie memory that will stay with you forever?
When I was on the phone with the emergency vet with Emily in a bad state on a perch, and we thought she was dying, and out plopped an egg! We were all so relieved!
6. Where is your birds main living area?
The birds have about 800 square feet of space divided between an indoor and outdoor room. When the weather works, they can come and go between the areas. I hang out in their space when I'm home.
7. Did you change things in your home to accommodate your birds and if so what kinds of things did you change?
We designed the two bird spaces and had them built especially for the birds. This way they have their own AC and alarm system.
8. Are you involved in any kind of bird related group or activities?
Just Avian Avenue
9. What is the one luxury item you would love to have for your bird(s)?
Can't think of anything
10. Is there any bird that you dream of owning and if so why?
Already have my dream team
11. Describe a typical day with you at home with your birds.
Weekdays they are out 4 hours, weekends 5-6 hours. They always get a four hour naptime during the day. Jackson is 21 and needs his rest . They eat dinner out on their trees and fly around and play all evening. Bedtime is 8:30.
12. What have you learned about owning birds that you would like to share?

13. If you knew then what you know now about birds, what would you do differently?

14. What other hobbies do you have?
I like taking pics of the birds. Like reading.
