Hello!
I love birds of all kinds, but my love of birds started with my pet chickens! I love parrots especially and I am lucky as I get the chance to volunteer with them every week! My very long term goal is to eventually get macaws and/or African greys, but for now I am trying to convince my mum to get budgies (she hasn't said yes but she hasn't said no...)
I am a year 12 student in the UK and I am hoping to become a vet, so looking to apply to university later this year. I would especially love to become an exotics/zoo vet, maybe even specifically focusing on avian medicine!
I am currently completing my EPQ research project on the topic 'how effective are the bird flu prevention measures in the UK?' and I am aiming to analyse 3 main areas: how well protection zones around infected premises prevent the spread of disease to other nearby premises, the economic impact of the restrictions on the commercial poultry industry, and how well the regulations were followed by bird owners, farms and zoos. If you kept birds in the UK any time from 2020-2023, this is the part you can help me with. I have designed a survey regarding biosecurity during national avian influenza lockdowns and housing orders. The results are completely anonymous so I encourage you to be completely honest in your responses. Any replies will be hugely appreciated!

Once this research is completed I am hoping to write an article about it, in order to benefit bird owners by highlighting the importance of these regulations in keeping your birds safe, raising awareness of the damaging economic impact bird flu has had on the UK's poultry industry, suggesting to bird keepers how they could better follow the guidelines to ensure the safety of their birds, and maybe even highlighting some improvements that could be made to the existing regulations to further reduce outbreaks. Overall I am hoping my research can be highly beneficial to the bird keeper community, so any help would be appreciated!
It is nice to be joining a community of fellow bird lovers!
