:omg: Mabel is a PRO at cracking almond shells.
I'm thinking of purchasing other types of nuts for her to work at. Which other ones do you suggest for her?:cool1:

How about brazil nuts? They are really hard to break open if you ask me.

Walnuts are a good one I think too, sometimes you can "help" them a bit and as long as they have a little crack or groove to get their beak in they can do the rest. I find hazelnuts tough for the medium birds because the shell is so smooth. Way to go Mabel! :)

Sidney Can NOT get a Walnut out of the shell, Gave him one last week after 4 days of trying my b/f felt bad and used his Pliers to start it , only then could he get it open
he also couldn't open the Brazil nut, had to give him a hand with it as well

but He did not stop trying He'd get frustrated drop it to the bottom of the cage and go back down later and get it and try again and kept doing it through out the day, til the b/f finally caved and gave him a hand lol

Pecans, walnuts, filberts are great. Forget about Mac nuts. She will not be able to crack them. Also stay away from Brazil nuts. I doubt she could crack them, but you also have to be careful of the aflatoxins in Brazil nuts.

Pine nuts are also awesome.

Don't forget Palm nuts, too. They love them!

hazel nuts. Those take some work!
They do! My two don't eat them but they sure like cracking them and getting the nut out.

Other than Almonds and Hazelnuts; I crack open all the other nuts just enough to peek inside to be certain I'm not giving them a rotten one.

I've noticed that some hazelnuts are large, usually the ones you buy separately, but the ones in the assortments are often smaller and easier to crack, so I think she could manage those. My RFM has no trouble with the smaller ones...

We are all nuts...:hehe:

I saw a hyacinth macaw crack a macademia nut once. Macademia nuts are so hard, you need a special nut cracker...unless you have a hyacinth macaw handy...

The thing about parrots is if there is a weakness or a slight crack in a nut they will find it and work on it until they manage to get it open. If nuts are really hard I just give them a little tap with a hammer to create that weak spot. They always find it and start working on it.

That's what we do too. I take my meat tenderizer and bang the nuts once just to give them a slight crack and the birds take care of the rest :)
