Help with an aggressive cockatiel

Good evening everyone!

I have a three (almost four) year old male cockatiel called Vega. I have had him since he was about five months old. He has always been out of his cage except for at night and has free run of the house. He is generally very tame, occasionally a bit grumpy but generally really friendly and pleasant. He lives in our living room, he eats a healthy diet which is a mix of seeds and greens.

Over the last 24 hours there has been a sudden change in his behaviour. Last night whilst watching the television he was getting very amorous with my foot and trying to mate with it, something he has not tried doing before. He has previously been frisky around certain slippers my girlfriend has but we discourage that behaviour.

This morning he was absolutely obsessed with my feet, and was attacking me when I tried to put my hands near him to move him away. He bit hard enough to draw blood, which is something he has never done before. He keeps flying onto the floor to get near my feet and has been behaving very aggressively, biting quite hard and flying at heads.

Aside from him trying to mate with my foot last night, there has been no other change that could have prompted this behaviour. There is nothing new in his living space. We take care to make sure that his cage is light and clean and not in a state that would make him hormonal.

This evening because he was still being so aggressive we had to catch him and put him in his cage and move him to a quiet room to calm down.

I am at a bit of a loss for what to do. This is undoubtedly aggressive hormonal behaviour but it has come from nowhere with no buildup at all, and I am not sure what to do to calm him down and stop him being so aggressive.

Guidance and tips would be very welcome. What should I be doing or not doing to get him to settle? How can I discourage him from seeing feet as potential mates?

Is it bare feet or socks on slippers on ?

when you say keep his cage light what times are you turning lights off or covering his cage as long daylight hours can encourage mating behaviours

my lovebirds pretty sure she female I had to reduce daylight hours as she was very aggressive in summer now I shut curtains (black out ) in bird room about 7 turn light off winter now and open curtains about 8:30/9 and it’s massively helped she’s not hunting me down to bite at minute still massively cage aggressive but we are working on if she doesn’t lunge she gets a treat but their is times she doesn’t lunge waits for treat then bites my finger instead of treat:banghead:

pico was obsessed with a knot rope perch I removed it as he would bite attack anyone/thing that came near it (obviously you can’t remove your foot) but could u change it cover it or remove socks slippers the dark hours have helped pico too
He now loves his cat ball bell but he’s not as obsessed with it if anyone me or other birds are near it he flys down and takes it off in his beak to a quiet area of bird room so at the minute I do feel he’s changed attached to something else even after removing first one he did give it a few months inbetween though

This is very helpful thank you.

He has been obsessed with my feet whether they are in shoes or barefoot!

Until today he’s always just been in the living room and as long as we are awake the lights have been on, so at times he probably wasn’t getting much darkness especially if we were going to bed in the small hours. Not that it’s been a problem before, it’s just been shocking to see the sudden change in behaviour.

Hopefully giving him some decent dark time hours will help with his mood and hormones.

Really he should get 12/12 of each day I think that’s right but if he’s hormonal make the days 10/11 hours nights longer definitely doesn’t sound like he’s getting much solid no interrupted sleep u can always cover his cage if he’s in living room hopefully that will stop the foot fetish :meh:

Uh oh, sounds like he’s ready to get busy!

My male tiel hasn’t had his first… uh… season yet, but from reading through everything, I’ve learned he’ll need some extra “sleep time” hours - ideally birds need 12 hours of sleep, and from what I’ve read, during mating season they’ll need a bit more darkness to combat the hormones.

Tteok is a foot lover as well, and I know I’ve started bad habits by letting him sing to my toes. I’m pretty sure I’ll have to be socks and/or shoes full time when it comes.

He definitely sounds hormonal. You can try increasing his hours of sleep/darkness by 2 hours for 2 weeks to try to get them back in check.

You can also rearrange his cage, make him work for his food more by foraging, give him a new toy and move the cage to a new area to help curb his hormones.
