Hello Everyone.
I'm so happy I found this site. However, I have to say it makes me sad as well. Back in 1998, I adopted a Timneh African Grey, named "Max." He was my first bird ever.
Ever since I was a kid I always wanted a "talking bird." I don't know if it was because it was an only child and I needed someone to talk to, but for whatever reason I was always intrigued.
In 1995, I had a co-worker who had a blue and gold and our conversations ended up refueling my desire for a "talking bird" again. So, I ended up starting to do research and discovered Dr. Pepperberg and "Alex". And fell in love.
Well fast forward, I adopted Max and had him for a few years. I was married and working full time. I learned a lot with Max and was able to teach him some things. Well in 2001 I had a baby and panicked about being a first time mom and the owner of a avian toddler. Max started plucking and I just felt I wasn't able to give him the attention he needed. I was so sad and to hear that the next owner changed his name to "Merlin." In my mind, I thought that was cruel. Here we have this beautiful bird who had his name for years , and then to have it be changed on him, just hurt me so much.
Surrendering Max has been one of my more regretful moments in my life. I worked so much with him and learned so much. And I regret it even more so, after finding all these "new" resources available to me. Back then there was no YouTube. There was no "BirdTricks". And I'm pretty sure this wonderful form was not around back then either.
So, now I am divorced and I have too younger adult kids. And after finding these new resources, that "fire" is being refueled again and making me want to have a do-over. I really regret not keeping Max. However, I do understand that since parrots live a long time, I have to make sure I have a good backup plan. So I'm investigating more. And contemplating more. I would have to start over from scratch.
Anyway, thank you for listening. I'm happy to be here and reading and learning more about all of your adventures and challenges.
