Hedgehog Handling!

Hi there,
Most of the time when i handle Sidney he just stays curled up, maybe pokes his nose out to take a bit of food off me, but wont uncurl properly until i put him down. But last night we had a breakthrough He let me pick him up without curling, then ran from hand to hand with no fear at all! I dont know how long people usually have to take to get them a bit more outgoing when being handled so dont know if we're doing well or not, but i only got him Saturday and as he's my first hoggie i am really pleased with our progress

Are hedgehogs sold as pets now? I ask as I have only seen them in the wild up to now and helped the injured back to health in the past.
What do you feed it on? We used to use dog food and have to put very shallow dishes of water down for them.
They seem to be declining in numbers around us in past few years though.

Thanks for the replies everyone, he is totally adorable!!

He is not noisy at all, other than when he goes on his wheel (i need to get a new wheel!!) and when he's munching on his food. He eats dry cat food, fruit and veg, crickets and mealworms

When i handle him, if he curled up tightly in a ball like in the first picture it does hurt a bit, but once he's uncurled and relaxed the quills go flatter so it doesnt hurt at all

Yes, he is an albino! They come in loads of different colours, he just happened to be one that was left in a litter, i probably wouldnt choose an albino as the eyes freak me out lol! BUT, he is adorable and very, very sweet.

And yes, they are sold as pets. But he's not a "normal" hedgehog you'd see out in the garden, he's an african pygmy hedgehog
