There are ZERO Avian "Certified" vets in Hawaii, but we have Avian "Specialists". There are only two places you can really take your birds here:
1. Dr. Ako at The Pet Doctor in Kahala.
2. Dr. Caspers or Dr. Walsh at Feather & Fur in Kailua.
I would not trust to take my birds anywhere else. There are currently a couple or few "up-and-coming" Avian Specialists, but they've got a long way to go.
Dr. Ako would be the #1 go-to guy on the island, as he's been working with birds the longest and was Dr. Caspers mentor. Dr. Ako is a member of the Association of Avian Veteranarians. His clinic is a hole-in-the-wall in need of restoring and always smells like a wet dog, but his prices are VERY reasonable compared to other vets on the island (though I'm finding out our vets here are more expensive than the mainland!). I really like him and have switched from Dr. Caspers to him (you'll see the reason below) and sometimes bring him toys for his Amazon and two newly adopted budgies (a client of his passed away and he took them in). He also had a Grey, but he/she passed away recently.
Dr. Caspers is a nice guy (not sure if he's a member of the Association of Avian Veteranarians, but I'm assuming so), but I've stopped seeing him because he continuously put Mika on antibiotic after antibiotic month after month (and he was put on antibiotics from the previous "Exotics" vet I was seeing as well - having put Mika on different antibiotics for a total of a WHOLE YEAR between the two vets!!) and couldn't figure out what was wrong with him. When my bf discussed this with the people on Lovebirds Plus Community, they were SHOCKED and were surprised that either Mika wasn't dead from the entire year of meds or at least severely compromised. I actually believe they did do damage to his immune system, though, as he gets bacterial infections easier now than before that year of meds. Feather & Fur is a very nice looking clinic that offers bottled waters, coffee, and sodas - but it reflects in their prices!! They are EXTREMELY expensive!!
