A friend in the San Francisco area saw these Flickers digging in his garden in the morning and snapped some pictures. They are related to woodpeckers and we don't often see them so it was a rare sighting. There were two birds, apparently a male/female pair.
We have a flock of flickers in our neighborhood, they like to come eat from the anthills in our yard sometimes. We usually see males, and they don‘t visit our yard very often. They like rotten stumps, so does the pilleated woodpecker.
