It does depend on the bird, but yeah I could call my YCM mean sometimes hahaha.
Going to try to give some examples but I am so bad at getting across what I mean.
I have seen people pick up birds when they are something they are not supposed to be, but with mine(and my green cheek to a lesser extent) that is more easily said then done. They may step up but if they don't get a reward they fly back instantly and will not step up again. If you do treat them, hey, I can get a treat if I fly here. Of course it is a little more complicated then that, but that is an example of what I mean by spicy. I see tons of birds that if you are a little persistent, they come off, but not my boys. But then I am very free choice oriented in how I handle my birds(as I think many on this forum are), but still mine would not tolerate being handled as I see some birds on social media being handled.
You don't tell any bird no(as in, they will protest, probably hahaha), but usually distract etc. But sometimes they get a little worked up, really quickly, and they tend to nip, jona a little worse he flies at faces. He doesn't bite bite, and if you handle it right it is totally fine but my SO is a little less great in handling that behaviour then I am. So he was excited, and he was going to fly at my SO, I was feeling experimental so I said, Jona no, don't. Usually we have other things we do to mold that behaviour. He stopped! Getting all excited and flew at me actually intent to bite. Whoops. I think the second time I told him no like that, and I was very calm not mad or anything, just like oh don't just come over here and play with me. Because it is not malice when he does it but excess energy(and he flies a ton and is usually in his cage just 2 to 3 hours to eat) The flying at faces behaviour has already gotten much much better, but my older illigers still did it if you can't calm him down quickly enough, or put some distance and toys between you and them.
Both of them sometimes just nip to see if it gets a reaction. I observed it Jona recently too, Orion has done it since we adopted him.
I have a scar in my finger it seems because a few months back I was tying to things together. Birds were interested and I always let them help, it was on one of the trees, so 'theirs'. If I pay attention it is never a problem, if they react I act accordingly and it is never an issue, sometimes if they are not comfortable I just wait till they are asleep. But I was so absorbed because the things just were not behaving and jona decided it was his and I needed to leave. I missed it as he was on my back(I was a little bend over) he got some good bites in there. Lesson learned.
Seriously I love mini macaws, if you like their attitude it is perfect. They are little buggers but I love it. Of course they are all different and some are just sweeties, Orion is mostly sweet/well predictable so it is easy to avoid situations. I always know what jona is going to do too(at least when I pay attention) but his mind changes every few seconds. Orion gets like that too, but less often, which could be older age, but from what I heard he has always been a little less in your face more laid back. He also comes to 'help' with stuff and has a big aggression potential in those moments if you deny him something. But if you think it through before(put something down to give him for example) it's totally okay. They both give back stuff when I ask too because they know the reward is good, but if they are really into something they may just fly off. Oh, massive havoc causers mine too, why do they have to pick up ceramic bowls and fly off with them hahaha and stuff like that. Sorry it got so long, I just always think of one more thing
I would love a sun!!! But hate the noise so would never. I have considered hahns but I liked the other more. I think aside of the noise which realistically I would not want to live with same for quaker although I kinda like their scream, I would pick a sun, hahns, quaker, Senegal. Caiques are awesome but that aggression is not something I want in my flock. One day though, if I can have a seperate area I would love to have 2.
So excited to see what species you decide on. There aren't any bird stored over there where you can meet a few, are there? If you can see the species at a sanctuary or something that would probably help in getting an idea for their behaviour types at such.
