Merry Christmas everyone! We were fortunate to not lose power during the Buffalo blizzard, but this storm was a wake up call to the fact that we need backup power to protect our birds. I wanted to buy a diesel engine for reliability and long run time. Someone suggested that diesel particulate is dangerous for parrot lungs. Is this really a concern if the engine is running outside?

Welcome to the forums!

All generators need to be outside regardless of their fuel source, and that will make them perfectly safe for everyone inside.

That said, you will also need to think about how you'll get the power from outside to where it needs to be inside (without needing to crack open a window or door in the frigid weather). An electrician would be able to create a passthrough to facilitate this, and route it into the essential circuits on your electrical panel.

Another option is hardwired natural gas generators, like those from Generac (if you have natural gas) which is great since the fuel source doesn't need refilling.
