Food Coloring Wilton's UPATED DIRECTIONS

I know everyone has been asking lots of questions about dye wood with food coloring and especially Wilton's. I have updated directions for Wilton's andam sorry if anyone has tried to already mix theirs with poor results. These are the corrected directions:

For all colors EXCEPT Sky Blue:

Heat 1 cup of water in Microwave for 90 seconds. Almost boiling.

Add Wilton's Coloring and mix well. You may want to let it sit for about 10 minutes stiring ocassionaly to help dilute.

Poor into container. Poor into container with 3 cups of rubbing alcohol.

For Sky Blue:

Heat 1 cup of water in Microwave for 90 seconds. Almost boiling.

Add Wilton's Coloring and mix well. You may want to let it sit for about 10 minutes stiring ocassionaly to help dilute.

Poor into container with 4 cups of rubbing alcohol.



Dye wood. The wood only needs to be dipped and removed. You do not need to leave the wood sitting in the dye for a long period of time.

Store any used dye.

Please note that ants love this stuff so make sure that after the wood dries overnight (may need longer in humid conditions) to store in air tight containers or ziplock bags.

The Wilton's gels come in a tiny bottle that is 1 oz. I use this whole bottle.

I used their powder dye for cake icing a few years ago when we made a play gym - along with normal food coloring from the store. gotta say the Wilton's Did a better job, it seemed to "soak" into the wood better, didn't take as much to make it nice and bright

but I colored mine by hand with some of my kids' paint brushes - and That was one very messy job - that's why the play gym was only partially colored lol

I will have to take a picture someday and show you guys the dye rack I have and what the garage floor and table back splash look like. I dye an average of 4 days a week. It is quite pretty. Maybe a Picasso. And ooohhhh my hands when the gloves get a hole in them. Sometimes it looks like my hands are black and blue.

lol i can imagine - my mom used to bake cakes as a 2nd job I remember the cabinets full of wiltons dyes, She loves Wilton's products

she still has every single cake pan she ever used (all are designs like pooh, trucks, tractors etc) stored in triple trash bags in our attic Some still have the paper glued to them from when you buy them because she never used them.. lol and she had this job when I was around 8 yrs old So those are some very Old , well preserved and still usable cake pans

Ann I have a couple more questions. Do you store your unused dye at room temperature or in the fridge? How long do you let the wood dry before using it? I will be dying soft wood. (spruce/pine)

I store my unused dye at room temperature. I do not store it out in the garage as when it is too hot or too cold it does funky things to the coloring. I typically let the wood set overnight. However I live in a very dry climate. Depending on where you are you may want to let it sit longer before storing. If you are dying rope please make sure that you feel in between the strands to insure that it is completely dry or it will grow mold.

Thanks! I plan on dying my wood and letting it dry on a rack (like for baking). Will this leave lines on my dyed wood? Sorry, first time dying wood here!

It will leave some lines. No mater how you dye the wood you will end up with lines. Dont redye the lined area as it will darken the coloring.
