Our "Mayor of the Avenue" award is presented to a member who exhibits the qualities that distinguish them to be an upstanding credit to the Avenue, a loving, informed, conscientious and caring bird parront and an all around good neighbor.

I am happy to announce that Jan is February's Mayor of the Month.
I enjoyed reading your interview, and am sure that everyone else will as well!

1. What kind of birds do you have (age, species and names)?

As many of you may or may not know, I no longer have any birds. My B&G Macaw Kuka was my last feathered kid and she passed away 2 years ago at the age of 28.

2. What got you interested in birds?

It ended up being my sister who first got into birds, then my parents got a Cockatiel then the next thing you know, they had got me a Cockatiel. Then from there it grew!

3. What have your birds brought to your life?

The birds brought me joy in many ways. I can't even count the ways but I know that when having over 50 parrots they needed me in so many ways. I gave up vacation with the rest of my family to be home to care for them and to raise the baby birds each summer.

4. What have you learned from sharing your life with your birds?

I mostly learned that they think they were the boss of me! They depended on me. They taught me to be patient.

5. What's one birdie memory that will stay with you forever?

One summer day our B&G Kuka was out side in her aviary cage, the dog Koko (German Shepard) was out by her cage minding her own business and from the opened window we hear Kuka say: "Koko". Koko looks at her and Kuka says Koko again, Koko stops and looks at her. Then in a very long drawn out voice Kuka says: 'Baaaaaddddddd' (bad) Koko. Koko looks at Kuka and then just walks away with a sad look!! It was really funny! Guess Kuka thought the dog needed scolding!! LOL! The word "BAD" was one of Kuka's favorite words. Just like I would drop something and Kuka would tell me bad!

6. Where is your birds main living area?

My Pet Birds had their own bird room area. My Breeder birds had outdoor aviaries.

7. Did you change things in your home to accommodate your birds and if so what kinds of things did you change?

Yes, just dedicated a 14' x 23' room. I've had many birds come and go in this room especially during my baby bird season.

8. Are you involved in any kind of bird related group or activities?

No, never involved myself due to living in a rural area.

9. What is the one luxury item you would love to have for your bird(s)?

I always wanted to get stainless steel cages but you know the prices were out of the question.

10. Is there any bird that you dream of owning and if so why?

Yes, the Hyacinth ... that's a dream bird of many people! I did not get one due to the fact of not having ample room for caging. Then when I got more up in age, I felt it would not be fair to get another Macaw with me getting too old.

11. Describe a typical day with you at home with your birds.

My typical day with the birds were like many other bird owners... with Kuka, the minute she sees, you hurry to her cage to let let her out of her cage before she starts the seed flinging and makes a huge mess! All other birds that were in the room they wanted out too but they did not have such a big attitude like Kuka.

12. What have you learned about owning birds that you would like to share?

The birds can bring you a joy of happiness, peace. Their antics are fun to be around and they always surprise you with something you least expect.

13. If you knew then what you know now about birds, what would you do differently?

I would have loved to go bigger on everything, the room, the caging for the pet birds and for the aviaries, more room for the breeders. My cages weren't real small but would have liked more room along with heating and air for the aviaries.

14. What other hobbies do you have?

I'm not sure what my hobbies are, I seem to just make the stainless toys that I sell. Not much time to get into hobbies. I do a veggie garden in the summer time, have been doing that for years. I am more less a home body.

15. Anything else you would like to share?

After loosing my B&G Kuka and now with my age, I won't get another bird. I would love to but I know better and the dander from them bothers my breathing so with no birds around me since Kuka left us, I have been breathing better. I started with birds in 1986 so I had many years with all of my feathered kids. I miss them! :)

Congratulations! (I am stunned actually that you've never been Mayor before. You're amazing!) Not to push the bird issue, but have you considered a small senior bird? I love my old guys so much and they're often over looked at rescues.....

I completely agree, and take the full blame for this oversight!
Oh my goodness. I didn't mean to make any one feel bad or point blame at all! I just would have guessed that it happened before. All the mods do such amazing jobs. Truly. I appreciate everything you do.
