Had to take Elima to the emergency vet this evening after she broke a blood feather on her wing, started bleeding and I couldn't locate the end of the feather. Normally I can handle blood feathers but the most critical thing is to make sure you get all of it out and I couldn't find the end and she would bleed whenever I tried to clean her up so in to the emergency vet we went.

Everything is fine now. She had stopped bleeding by the time I had her boxed up and was in the car on the way to the vet. They also couldn't locate any remaining feather parts (they think she may have dropped the rest at some point while I was running around trying to clean her up) so they cleaned her up and she seems fine but man that sure was scary and expensive. Why do they always do this after regular vet hours?

Oh no! Glad everything turned out okay! I got to see a broken blood feather in action the other day for the first time....:dead:!

Regular e-vets are $100 around here...what do avian e-vets usually run just for the examination?

Glad everything turned out ok! It does always seem that the craziest things always happen after normal business hours, doesn't it?

Bleeding I couldn't stop would send me running to the E Vet too! Too, too scary. Glad she's OK.

About the $$$ I'm with you on wondering why every emergency happens after hours.

Wow that must have been a lot of blood! Very scary! I'm glad she is doing well.

I took my parakeet into an avian vet at night after he got his head caught in a toy. The vet had to drive in. Pip was very bloody and I thought he had lost an eye. The vet cleaned him up and put a tube down his throat to feed him, because we didnt know how long he had been hanging like that. I was probably only in there about 30 mins., but the bill was at least $200. He said to take him home and that he would either make it or not. I honestly didnt mind the bill and was very happy that Pip ended up being fine with no damage to the eye.

I found a feather in Secret's cage a couple of days ago that must have been a blood feather. It was still rolled up with plastic looking sheath around it - a tiny bit of green unfurled at one end and at the other, it was bloody.

Thankfully all is well here.
