One month TODAY is when I got Louie my parrot! He is 21 years old and is the most sweetest thing ever! He talks up a storm, SOOO CUTE!!! My concern is that he doesn’t know how to Step-up from his cage or from anywhere else. The only time that he does step up is if he glides off the cage and lands on the ground. Everyday all day long I’ll go to him and ask him to step up. I put my hand out, or I’ll lean in and ask him to step up on my shoulder, I’ve even purchased like a stick to have him step up on that, but he just doesn’t know how! There are times that I’ll be sitting out there with him on my iPad and he’ll say something to get my attention and when I look up he’s lifting his leg wanting to step up. I’ll go to him and it just breaks my heart that he wants to so badly, but he just can’t To make you understand better I’ve attached a video and in that video you’ll see that he DOES want to STEP-UP but he struggles and makes these weird kinds of noises… I really do hope that there is someone that knows exactly what I’m talking about and that can help me help Louie… OK, SO I WENT TO MY ATTACH MY VIDEO AND IT’S NOT COMING UP FOR ME TO POST IT! DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW I CAN POST IT??? PLEASE HELPPPPPP!!!!

You need to go slow and treat every try ..if he puts up a foot by your hand I would treat for that and then slowly ask him to put a foot on your hand or stick and if he does treat for that and just keep on that way ..sometimes it can take weeks to train them to step up but it sounds like he is almost there ..good luck :D

The only way to attach a video is through a YouTube link.

Bebe is not a amazon parrot, but teaching older bird be command is treats lots of healthy treats. When Bebe came to my house, he was frighten of anything having to with hands. Even feeding and watering was a challenge. He is still deathly afraid of hands, but we have worked around a few of them. He will step up on a gray hand towel as long as there are no fingers or thumb showing. But he won't stay there long we have gotten to the point about a foot from his cage then he will fly the rest of the way.
My greatest challenge was getting him back into his cage without bullying him. It took several months of working with him to 'cage up'. He does it now with a treat at the end.
Work at it every day and with sessions no long then 15-20 minutes. You will know when he has had enough for the time being.

By the way, Secret steps off of my stick backwards. Not sure why, but that's how she rolls.

Are you holding the stick higher than the perch she is on?
