Prepared the chop for the week last night and bought some cilantro to add to it then chickened out and left it out of the batch. I couldn't remember if it was safe or not.

Also..how about eggplant? My husband bought one home and I haven't served it because I keep forgetting to ask.

I believe that Cilantro should be fine it is a variety of Parsley. As for eggplant, I have read differing data on that. I have fed that before with no ill or side effects. It is not something I do much anymore, due to how bad it discolors in the air. I would much rather offer squashes over an eggplant.

Cilantro used to be on a lot of "toxic" lists. I gather it may only be the "seeds" that form after the plant goes to seed that are toxic, but I am still nervous about feeding it. (And parsley shows up on some "toxic" lists as well.)
Cilantro, dill, and parsley show up in Dr. Scott Echol's Food for Avian Species form located here: http://avianstudios.com/forms/:

Cockatiels, Grass Parakeets, Budgerigars, Parrotlets, Lovebirds, Pyrrhura Conures (Small Parrots)
Smaller leafy veggies such as parsley, dill and cilantro tend to be favored over large leaf varieties.
I have no doubt that they may have been on toxic lists at one point, but I feel confident taking his advice :)

Well, they still show up on about half or more of the toxic lists. Just pointing that out, so that people can decide for themselves what they're comfortable with.

Why else are we here if not to learn? :) I definitely feel that more information, even opposing information, is best

Hmmmm..well I added it to the chop this morning and boy did it freshen it up nicely..smelled so good. I probably won't buy it again though because anything iffy makes me nervous.

Just about anything is dangerous if fed in large quantities over a long period of time... for instance, someone drinking carrot juice every single day for years! His skin might turn orange and he could die of a vitamin A overdose. Does that mean that carrots are dangerous to feed? Not at all, if fed as a small portion of the diet! Same can be said for meat in humans. Eat a high red meat diet, and you could have high uric acid levels and possibly even failing kidneys and/or gout. As part (not main) of the diet, meat is healthy for us!

I usually go with a huge variety of foods fed in small quantities... hence chop/mash/kitchen sink/whatever you want to call it, works so great! It combines a huge list of ingredients for your birds and this can then be fed as part of the diet.

My birds (and bunnies for that matter) all eat cilantro and parsley. In research I've done specific to rabbits, some say that parsley has a relatively high amount of oxalic acid and so it, along with other veggies that have higher oxalic acid content, should ideally be rotated with veggies lower in oxalic acid. I don't know what the oxalic acid content of cilantro is and I haven't heard it mentioned as one with a particularly high oxalic acid content, but I keep it's relation to parsley in the back of my mind and treat it similarly.

I like to subscribe to the 'theory of moderation' - you can have too much of a good thing but that doesn't make it bad! :D

Cilantro will be OK, but there is differing opinions on eggplant. If you wish to try something different have a go with Buk Choy and Silver Beet. I have no idea as to why they are not on the safe items here as we have been using them on the other side of the Pacific for ever. Silver Beet is especially good for them as it contains lots of vitamins and minerals. I just put a whole leaf on the bottom of the cage and let them go for it. Just give it a good wash first. :)
