It is with great pleasure that I announce the
Celebirdy for the month of November 2021
@Leih 's Aoife
1. How did you acquire your bird?
I got Aoife from a local breeder who has a parrot shop (which has a huge room of only toys!) She is my first bird and I had no idea where to get a lovebird. She was the only blue one they had so of course I had to bring her home!
2. What is your bird's name, species, age and sex?
Aoife (pronounced E-fa) is a blue black-masked lovebird hen (Agapornis personatus), she is 3 and a half years old.
3. Does your bird do any special tricks?
Aoife can wave and has learned how to use the wave to ask me for a treat, or for more treats. We're working on more tricks.
4. What are some of your bird's favorite foods?
She's a picky eater and only likes her pellets, millet, hemp seeds, Nutriberries, and some freeze dried veggies.
5. What is the funniest thing your bird has done?
She does a lot of silly things daily, but something I find the funniest is when I am sitting on the floor drilling wood pieces to make her some toys, I will look up and she's hanging upside down from a perch above me, just watching intently what I'm doing! She's very nosey.
6. How has your bird enriched your life?
I live alone with my four birds and three cats, and I'm always making toys, making foragers, coordinating fly time, giving baths, cleaning cages, having special one on one time with Aoife. There is a lot of time during the day that I devote to my birds and I find that I'm bored after they go to bed. When I come home Aoife chirps for me, and in the morning she chirps when its time to get up. I have learned so much about birds since getting her and the relationship I have with her is so much more than I expected to have, I truly can't imagine what it was like before I brought her home!
7. What would you tell people who are considering this species?
Lovebirds are great little birds, they truly are a huge personality in a tiny body. She's bossy, sassy, sweet, playful,.... Not knowing anything about birds when I got Aoife, I can say now, three years later, that she is truly everything I was looking for in a bird.
8. What is the activity and noise level of your bird?
Lovebirds are very active, always busy doing something. This is the main reason I chose a lovebird, though. Aoife is always jingling her bell toys or "kicking" around a bell ball. She chatters all day and calls for me if I leave the room for "too long." And she loves to fly, outside of cage fly time daily is a must and I make sure to have time set aside for her everyday. Some days she gets the "zoomies" and its so fun to watch her go!
9. What are some of your bird's quirks?
Sometimes she gets into a mood where she just doesn't want to go back into her cage, and I swear she takes delight in my frustration! She also loves to pester my two linnies, I can't let her out with them at the same time or even with their cage in the same room, so it makes flight time coordination a little tricky. Also, she is a hen, so she does lay eggs from time which means she can become fiercely protective of those eggs!
10. If your bird talks, what is the most surprising word or sentence it has said?
I always say that although Aoife doesn't say human words, she makes sounds that mean certain things and we have developed our own language with each other. She has a certain sound she makes if I'm too loud after she goes to bed, it sounds like she's saying "keep it down out there! I'm trying to sleep!"
11. What is your bird’s favorite treat?
Definitely El Paso Nutriberries, but she likes them put into a forager.
