It is with great pleasure that I announce the
Celebirdy for the month of June 2022
@scrape 's Lovie
1. How did you acquire your bird?
I met Lovie at the bird rescue I volunteer at. He was surrendered again. We hit it off from day one. A few months later I fostered and then adopted him. He wheedled his way into my heart and home.
2. What is your bird's name, species, age and sex?
Lovie is a lesser sulfer crested cockatoo. His age is unknown, although I would estimate his is older mainly because he had a tumor. He is presumed male.
3. Does your bird do any special tricks?
Not really. He says hi and I can flip him upside down.
4. What are some of your bird's favorite foods?
Lovie likes peas, almond butter, apple, banana, boiled broccoli, egg, sweet potato, and nuts.
5. What is the funniest thing your bird has done?
His expressions and reactions alone are so funny. One time I laid in my bed with him. He began strutting around the edge of the bed and starting hopping. It is so funny watching him hop and walk.
6. How has your bird enriched your life?
Lovie has changed my life quite a bit. I didn’t consider how much I would worry about him, and he has made my life more difficult, but I wouldn’t change a thing. He is my baby, and he is always on my mind. He is like a part of me. He is also a big motivator, I work hard so I can give him the best life he deserves.
7. What would you tell people who are considering this species?
I could give a lecture on Toos, but I will keep to the point. As much research and experience as you can get is best to prepare for cockatoo ownership. They are wild animals. In my experience, sulfer crested cockatoos in particular tend to find more reward in bad behavior, compared to other species. They can be daring and bold, I know a few who will aggressively go after other birds. They are playful jokesters, and very fun as long as you aren’t the butt of the joke. They know exactly how to charm you, and they bond easily. Their eyes will melt your heart, and there is nothing quite like sharing your life with a cockatoo.
8. What is the activity and noise level of your bird?
Lovie is very active. He loves to destroy and he spends most of his time playing. He is very loud, not a quiet Too. But he is good about being quiet when I am in the room. It is more noticeable because he doesn’t have any low volume noises in his repertoire. His “hi” is quiet, but he only says that when he wants something.
9. What are some of your bird's quirks?
Lovie likes it when I hold his water bowl for him and he will take the tiniest sips. He likes to stare into your eyes. He likes clanging his feeder doors and is very good at dismantling anything and everything. He will preen my hair and eyebrows. When he is playing in a box he will pop up and look at me, I tell him peekaboo and he goes back down. He has long, strong legs that help him reach the curtains to chew. He has no fear and would run all over the house if I let him. He doesn’t have great balance, he has been known to fall, so I carry him on my hand and often hold his toes.
10. If your bird talks, what is the most surprising word or sentence it has said?
11. What is your bird’s favorite treat?
Cheese (only for emergencies) and walnuts.
