Celebirdy of the Month
Mayor of the Avenue
Avenue Spotlight Award
- Real Name
It is with great pleasure that I announce the
Celebirdy for the month of June 2019,
Papaya is honored to be the Celebirdy of the Month!
1. How did you acquire your bird?
Papaya was originally my sisters bird. She got him around the same time I got Jellybean. I was not happy with the idea as I knew my sister would get tried of taking care of him within a couple of months. Also I knew suns had a reputation for being LOUD. Of course I was right, as soon as my sister would get up she would put Papaya in the cage with Jellybean. This bird would spend his waking moments screaming. I tried target training, foraging toys, rewarding for quiet moments, holding and talking to him but nothing matter. We had discuss rehoming him but I couldn't do it. At this point he had been with Bean for almost 2 yrs and they were clearly bonded.
Time has definitely made him better (and being scolded by Jellybean) he doesn't scream half as much as he did when he was a babe. When he does start getting to loud Jellybean will tell him to "Be quiet Papaya! That's bad!" Lol

2. What is your bird's name, species, age and sex?
Sir Papaya "Derp" McScreamaton is a Sun Conure. DNA male and will be 6 yrs old in June =^^=!
3. Does your bird do any special tricks?
He dances if you drum on something or sing to him and knows recall although we are still working with him. He likes to land on my head instead of my arm.
4. What are some of your bird's favorite foods?
Sweet peppers! Only red and orange ones. Sugar snap peas, blueberries, blackberries and pomegranate. He'll eat broccoli too but only if I cut it into tiny pieces and mix it really good so it sticks to his peppers and fruit.
5. What is the funniest thing your bird has done?
During a week of constant brickering between him and Jellybean. He would wait till Bean was not paying attention, slowly make his way over to him, pull his tail then bolt! I felt bad for Bean (even though he deserved it) but I have never seen Papaya move so fast xD! Now I know when Papaya is mad at Bean as it's his go to thing.
He also does "Postive Pose" it's this silly stance he does when I tell all the fids that we are gonna have a good day.
Positive Pose Papaya says have a fun and stress free day!
6. How has your bird enriched your life?
Papaya has help me become more patient for sure. He has taught me that I don't need to touch, cuddle or hold something to enjoy its presence. You can love something and be hands off.
7. What would you tell people who are considering this species?
Sun Conures are gorgeous. They're bright and colorful clowns that will make you laugh BUT they are loud. Papaya still has excited screaming fits that I have to let him ride out because no amount of talking, distracting, Jellybean threatening him or treat bribing will make him stop. It's his way of communicating how happy, scared or mad he is and I've learn to tune it out and respect his vocalizing. He is also very destructive! When my sister had him he chewed holes in her wall and destroyed a end table. Jellybean and I keep him busy enough that he leaves the walls alone but he did murder a shoe recently!
8. What is the activity and noise level of
He is a very active bird always on the move! He usually plays with toys throughout the day or flies laps around the room but also enjoys sitting with Bean and preening him or chilling on my head and tangling my hair up. I always joke that if I get a non blurry picture of Papaya it's because he allowed it xD! Noise level ? Well he is a sun. We have a 2 story house (he is on the top floor) and I can hear his call outside while sitting in my car, windows rolled up. You get use to it (atleast I did), the neighbors are astonished of his range sometimes.
9. What are some of your bird's quirks?
His ability to get caught up into almost any toy. I've had to limit what he can and cannot play with. He had beak and toes stuck in bells, tangled in rope, choked on plastic he chewed off toys, had a wood piece stuck in his nose, rope stuck in his crop, vine ball stuck to his head, large snappy bead stuck on his beak, I could go on. Danger Bird
10. If your bird talks, what is the most surprising word or sentence it has said?
He isn't a talker although he can make kissy noises and says step up in the most birdy voice.
11. What is your bird’s favorite treat?
Almonds and pistachios, definitely pistachios! He also loves nutriberries and freeze dried peas. Yesterday they got blueberry pancakes from Unapproved Vendor and him and Bean fought over a tiny piece despite their being big chunks in their food bowl lol
