I am very pleased to announce this months Celebirdy is the stunningly gorgeous Michael!
How did you aquire your bird?
I spent months researching different species. I fell in love with blue throats. I used Bird Breeders to find a breeder. After talking to a few I found
a breeder that I liked who also had a chick. Michael came home when he was 6 1/2 months old.
2. What is your birds name, age and sex?
Michael is a blue throated macaw. He is a DNA sexed male and is 2 1/2 years old.
3. Does your bird do any special tricks?
Michael does not really have any tricks. I have spent much more time playing with him than trying to teach him tricks.
4. What are some of your birds favorite foods?
Michael loves corn, pine nuts and broccoli florets.
5. What is the funniest thing your bird has done?
Michael likes to hang from the top of his cage using only his beak. While hanging he will flap his wings to make him almost swing.
6. How has your bird enriched your life?
Michael is great at helping me to relieve stress. Also, when I have had a bad day he can always make me feel better.
7. What would you tell people who are considering this species?
Blue throats are beautiful birds! They are very mechanical. They love to undo anything that they can get their beaks on. Their cage can not have
any screws, nuts or bolts that they can get at from inside their cage. When they scream they can be very loud like all large macaws. They go through large
amounts of wood. Another thing is that they are very beaky. They love to feel everything with their beaks and tongues. They are also very expressive.
When they get excited the white of their faces turns red.
8. What is the activity and noise level of your bird?
Michael is very active. His favorite thing to do is to chew wood, especially MPBT's wood. When he is not chewing he loves to climb around.
He likes to climb all around the outside of his cage. As for noise, like all birds he has his periods. Over all though he is pretty quiet. He usually only
screams when he is first opened in the morning and as the sun sets. One thing that I love about him is that he is quiet in the morning. He will stay quiet
until the shades on his windows are open. On weekends he stays "asleep" a bit longer which I like.
9. What are some of your birds quirks?
Michael only eats his grain, legume and vegetable mix when someone is sitting with him. Also, he loves to hang upside down. He is very
stubborn. If he decides that he does not want to do something then he will not do it. When he does not want to go back into his cage not even a pine nut
can convince him to go in.
10. If your bird talks, what is the most surprising word or sentence it has said?
Michael only says hello. However, he says it in three different voices (I have no clue where one of them came from). He does also practice
saying something else when no one is in the room. He mumbles it very softly so I have no idea what he is trying to say. I hope that one day he slips and
practices in front of me.
11. What is your bird’s favorite treat?
Hands down it is pine nuts. He goes nuts for them!
