It is with great pleasure that I announce the
Celebirdy for the month of January 2021
@d_msparkles Waffle Von Fluffenpants
1. How did you acquire your bird?
My partner is allergic to furry animals, so after our cats passed I knew we needed to find another option. I have been fascinated by birds since I did a report on owls in 2nd grade, and had watched all the interviews with Irene Pepperberg. I visited some local pet shops and fell in love with Green Cheeks and their silly, cuddly personalities. I went to ParrotStars in Arlington Heights, IL because they had such a good reputation for education and care. There were two little pineapples available that day--8 weeks old. One of the babies poked her head out from under a tea towel and peeped at me and I knew she was the one! We visited her until we could take her home just after 13 weeks.
2. What is your bird's name, species, age and sex?
Waffle is a female Green Cheeked Conure, pineapple mutation. She will be 3 in March of 2021.
3. Does your bird do any special tricks?
She knows how to "wave" but admittedly Mommy has really slacked off on the training.
4. What are some of your bird's favorite foods?
She's really good about eating fruits and vegetables--apples & walnuts are her favorites.
5. What is the funniest thing your bird has done?
One Thanksgiving we boarded her for the holiday and when she got home she said "F--- you!" She had never said that before and it's not in her vocabulary, so we think she picked it up at birdie camp!
6. How has your bird enriched your life?
She is so special and fun. She loves to cuddle, and provides sunshine and laughs on rough days. She is a ham, as many of you know here. I guess I got her used to the camera at a young age.
7. What would you tell people who are considering this species?
I had read that GCC's were the "quietest" of the parrots, and if that is true, I never want to have anything louder. She is a champion at shrieking when she is frustrated or tired.
Conures live up to their reputation of being nippy, but she has never drawn blood and I usually can tell she's just trying to communicate with me that she wants something or is unhappy about what I'm trying to get her to do.
Their reputation for being cuddly is also true, and makes all the shrieking and biting worthwhile. She loves to tuck in under my hand and take a little nap.
8. What is the activity and noise level of your bird?
She is still young so she is VERY BUSY. She's on the go and getting into things a lot of the time--although she can be left on her play stand with toys and will keep herself entertained.
Her noise level varies from soft grumbles to quacks and then SHRIEKS OF FRUSTRATION.
9. What are some of your bird's quirks?
She's so quiet in the morning--she'll stay under her cover even if she's awake and we can hear her quietly playing with her toys and peeping to herself.
She loves to stand on top of the dryer while it's running and "tap dance." I think it warms her little feet.
She LOVES other birds, especially macaws. We did a virtual penguin encounter and she was exclaiming "baby! baby!" at the screen. She knows herself as baby and I think she assumes all birds are called "Baby".
10. If your bird talks, what is the most surprising word or sentence it has said?
Ha ha, see above about the "f-you." One time a flock of geese flew over our house & she said, "Wow!" and then made kissy noises.
11. What is your bird’s favorite treat?
Waffle will do anything for a nutriberry!
Here are some pictures for you!
