Welcome to the neighborhood!
It is my great pleasure to introduce the Celebirdy of the Month OF JANUARY 2011, Sheldon.
Here is what Ferdinand had to say about Sheldon.
1. How did you aquire your bird?
We got Sheldon about three weeks after we got Fred, from the same breeder. Sheldon was actually a birthday present for me two years ago.
2. What is your birds name, age and sex?
Sheldon (named after "The Big Bang" character...which is why we have a "Penny" and had "Raj") is almost two years old (will be two in January) He is a male crimson bellied conure.
3. Does your bird do any special tricks?
Sheldon is very good about recall and will fly back to me when he sees my hand out or when I call him.
4. What are some of your birds favorite foods?
Sheldon eats most anything, he loves dried fruit, birdie bread, safflower and sunflower seeds, and fresh fruit - he also loves whatever you are eating, and can steal a bite better/quicker than any other bird in our flock!
5. What is the funniest thing your bird has done?
He does a lot of funny things...but how he hangs on the screen in the bird room waiting for me is probably my favorite thing he does...that and steal food - he knows he has to be quick to get it and can fly in and land on your hand and take his morsel as you are bringing food up to your mouth!
6. How has your bird enriched your life?
Sheldon and the rest of the birds have enriched my life in so many ways. We added on to our house so they could have a big bird room. I have discovered and been much more involved with helping out rescues and donating to the World Parrot Trust along with just being a whole lot more informed about companion birds. They motivate me to research and find ways to be a good parront to them, and we opened up an on-line bird store which we would never have contemplated before the birds came into our life. I have also become the guy that friend and co-workers will go to with anything bird related.
7. What would you tell people who are considering this species?
Crimson Bellied Conures are great birds, they have a great personality and love to be with you. They get along well with most other birds - especially conures. They are not super loud, but they are conures so they can have their moments, of course. They are not too common so they are going to be hard to find.
8. What is the activity and noise level of your bird?
They are quite active, I was so relieved when they started to fly, because before then..both Fred and Sheldon would walk around the house to find me. They now fly everywhere in the house (usually to find me) and are always busy doing something (so a lot of toys and shredding opportunities and foraging stuff is a must)
9. What are some of your birds quirks?
Sheldon likes to preen me, especially if I have a blemish or a scab (usually one he has made) and is very persistent about it. He loves to climb into my robes also. He likes to shower with me, but hates to get misted.
10. If your bird talks, what is the most surprising word or sentence it has said?
Sheldon doesn't talk much...he does say "step up" and give kisses. Fred has a bigger vocabulary, and can say "come on" and "youtube".
11. What is your bird’s favorite treat?
His favorite treat is any fruit that I hold for him to eat. He loves grapes and apples held for him - anything I can hold for him he loves to eat!
