Cage Placement Question

I'm wondering where the best place to keep buddy's cage. Not just now as he becomes accustomed to his new surroundings, but in the long term as well.

I feel like it's good to have him out in the main living area of our house so he has some company during the day. Of course, I think my daughter would like to have him in her room but she's in school all day and I'm guessing it's not a good idea to move his cage back and forth. . .

Place your budgie's cage in an area of the house where the most activity is. Sounds like the living room is a good place! You could have a playstand/playgym in your daughter's room so she can play with him when she gets home from school and I am sure that will make her feel a little bit better since she wants him in her room.

The best place for a cage is in the main living area away from drafts (windows, ac/heat vent) against one wall. Avoid the kitchen, next to a tv, a hallway, next to the front door. We have ours in our living room in the corner. It gives Gracie a view of the whole room without feeling exposed because two walls are behind her.

Unfortunately, I'm limited on options as our island cottage is quite small. However, we are transitioning back to the US in May and our home there has lots of room! I'm thinking of putting his cage by the door as it really is the only space we have in the living room. As you can see though, the room has an open floor plan and the kitchen is on the other side of the room. We don't use any Teflon cookware. I hate the stuff!

Best place for sure is the living room. Your daughter can always let Buddy out of the cage and take him to her room.
I have 2 cages in corners, and another against a wall.

Against that wall with the picture looks good.
Be careful, teflon is also in non stick appliances - waffle makers, plug-in grills...

Also, I bet that round light above your dining table will be a well loved swing/climbing frame for Buddy :laughing2:

And @MahaSarah , that is quite the signature! How do you tell them all apart when they are out together?

I would put the cage under the picture next to sliding glass door about a foot or so away from the door way. That way he is protected from drafts and is still in the living room away from the kitchen. It’s good you don’t use Teflon but the kitchen isn’t the best because you never want the bird out while you are dealing with a hot stove or cooking. Beautiful home by the way.

Thank you for the advice. I think we are a long way away from him being out of his cage. When we do let him out, it will be in the quiet and safety of my daughter's bedroom.

What do you mean?

He won´t come out, or you aren´t letting him out just yet?

Best thing is to leave the cage open while you are home so he can come out, explore and get to know the house and the people in it.

I haven't let him out just yet. Should I? I thought I should give him some time in the safety of his cage. I don't think the woman I got him from EVER let him out of his cage :-( Being new to all of this, I appreciate all the advice. I certainly want to be the best bird Mum I can be!

Is he a tame bird or untamed? It sounds like he is an untame little guy?

Open his cage door. Don´t force him out, let him come out if he chooses to :)
I´d advise to do this when you are home and not in a rush of out, just in case you struggle to call him back

I would let him out when you are sitting down watching tv or doing something quiet. My Conure gets spooked by laugh noises and will fly around if something loud comes on tv. Cut some fresh apple or grapes to have a lure to entice him back into the cage if he isn’t comfortable. Don’t force him and be patient. He is lucky to have people who care so much about him. ❤

You said you were guessing it's not a good idea to move a cage back and forth. It works for us. I move my Linnie's cage each day. She sleeps in our homeschool classroom, against a wall, doors to kitchen and family room. At noon I wheel her into the family room (in front of a window on a deck), open her door and she's in and out for the afternoon. At 7PM I roll her cage back to her sleep room, dim the lights at 8, turn them out at 8:30-9. She is used to this schedule and actually calls me when it's time. I think she likes having less TV noise as she gets ready for bed.

I move my birds cages to the balcony so they can soak up some sunshine :)

That's good to know, Dona & Zara! I should get a stand with wheels. I'm sure moving him would be less stressful that way! He likes being by the door. I have lots of birds in my yard and he tweets to them when they make noise. It's quite funny, the hummingbirds and bananaquits fly through the house to get to the feeders on each porch more quickly! I'll be interested to see how buddy responds to that! LOL!

My goodness that is a very small cage for a bird. Is it the main cage?

It's all that was available to me. When we get back to the US, we will get him a bigger cage. I see you are from Maryland! I'm originally from the Eastern Shore, Dianne!

You´d have a heart attack if you came over here and looked at the bird cages in the pet shops. They are disgraceful. I had to order mine online.

I'm sure! This cage is 23 1/2" L x 16" W x 16" H. I admit it's not ideal, but it could be far worse! You can't imagine what it would cost to have something shipped here. There's 65% duty, handling fees, and 12.%VAT! We'll be back in the US in May. He's been in this size cage for 5 years. I'm sure he'll survive for a few more months. After that, he'll live like a king!
