I would love to be able to do that- my heart breaks a little more each day that I see him like he has been and I can't help but feel it is my fault and I must be doing something wrong.

it's definitely not anything you've done! I really believe he's just being a very dominant male Mac. I have no doubt in my mind that if he was in the wild that he'd be the undoubted leader of the flock with the attributes you've said he's been displaying.
He's so lucky that have someone as understanding as you who loves him so much regardless of how angry he's acting and how determined he is to get you.

When my cockatoo went through puberty we had some rocky roads too, but things suddenly improved as she got a little older. There are a lot of a things a bird is sorting out as they mature. I know it is easier said than done, but I am cheering you on from afar.
