Ugh, Charlie just bit Tater on his eye and he got through the skin a little. Tater seems fine. He's enjoying all the attention and rubbing his eye against my finger as I hold him here.

There is no swelling in the white area but I am concerned about Tater's eyelid. It looks like Charlie bit through it. Tater's eyeball itself is fine. I took some photos but it's impossible to zoom in enough to see the tear in the eyelash line.

Is there any first aid I should do? Should I attempt to clean the small amount of blood off? Will the eyelid heal itself?

Scratch that. There is some swelling now. I'll call the vet.

If it is continuing to bleed, you need to put pressure on it. If it is torn, it may need stitches. I recommend taking Tater to a vet just to get it checked out.

Do you have any sterile eye wash? If you don't I would go get some. If you can't get any I would boil some water to sterilize and gently wipe the eye off. I'm not sure about putting on neosporin because it will get in his eye.

I put neosporin on Trinket's beak cuticle and it helped alot.

You need to watch this very closely and at the first sign of redness or swelling he needs to go to the vet for an oral antibiotic.

Yes, it's swelling now. Poor guy.

I just left a message for our bird doctor. He usually screens his calls but I haven't called on a Sunday before.

We are looking for sterlie eye wash in the first aid kit.

Eyes are pretty sensitive, I would have had it checked out even if it seemed okay. I hope you hear back from the vet soon.

Hi,

This is what we use for our birds

When you talk to your vet, ask him about using, "Meloxicam", for pain an inflammation, and Neo-Poly-Dex, antibiotic eye drops that are water soluble.

Hope your little one heals quickly.

Hello friends!

Just got back from a 24 hour vet down in Sac. My regular bird doctor wasn't available and this was recommended to me by UC Davis.

Came home with Clavamox and BNP Eye Ointment. He hates the ointment and I'm not looking forward to giving him the Clavamox. But I'm glad I went. His poor eye is puffy and I want him to feel better.

Gary, I wish I'd seen your response before I left so I could ask about those. If I have any issues with what I've been given I'll ask my Bird Vet about those meds.

Thanks for all the warm thoughts. If he hadn't gotten puffy I would have hemmed and hawwed about taking him in.
You guys are great!

(now... I need to be able to trust Charlie again...)

Woke up to kisses, but those are short lived since now it's time to 'torture' him. The eye is still puffy but maybe a tiny bit less than last night.

I know I was being a worried mother hen but I'm throroughly relieved he made it through the night. I know it isn't so scary as some of the things other people in this thread have had but this is his first injury. I hope it's his last.

I'll keep you updated. I'm looking forward to the puffiness going down.
