My new apartment complex does pest control every two months in all apartments, and we aren't allowed to opt out. I told them I have a bird and allergies and even suggested using a safer alternative myself, but they won't budge on the issue. I told them that means I might need to get a hotel room for my bird and I for a couple nights, and they couldn't care less. This Wednesday morning is the first time they're coming since I've been here.
I called the pest control company, and it looks like what they use is pyrethroid based, which should be pretty safe for anything that isnt a bug after it dries, based on what I've read. They recommend that babies and small children stay out of the apartment for 2 hours while it dries. With birds being extra sensitive to anything in the air, I'm not sure if that's enough time though. I've heard some people suggest keeping the bird away for 2 days.
They said that they won't spray in the bedroom, so I'm planning on moving the bird stuff in there and I'm considering finding a way to seal off the room.
Has anyone else had to deal with apartments that spray regularly for pests? How did you deal with it, and what happened?
The apartment managers tell me that they have another tenant with a parrot, and they don't have any issue with it. So I wonder if I'm maybe overreacting and he will be fine as long as he's in another room? I have considered sealing off the door to the bedroom and leaving the window in the living room open to help any fumes or aerosols dissipate.
Part of the problem is that I work 12 hr shifts the nights before and after, and they won't tell me what time they're coming. I usually get home at about 7:20am, and I'm worried there's a small chance they might come before then, so I will have to take him somewhere before I go to work for the night. Then I don't know how long it takes before it will be safe for him to come back, so I'll probably want to keep him out at least for the rest of the day and that night. My options are to either get a hotel room for us to stay in for at least 2 days or to bring him to my parents' house an hour away and commute an hour each way during that time. This is seriously stressing me out right now.
