Hi

Does anyone know if it's safe to use the canine rosehip powder formula for lovebirds? My lovebird has seen a vet for fractured wing and is on melaxocam but is having breakthrough pain. She wouldn't tolerate her wing being bandaged ..plucked her front neck feathers out. The vet said the bone next to the broken one is supporting it enough for it to heal anyway after xray.
Don't want to give her too much meloxicam so wondered what dose I would use of the canine rosehip powder which has good reviews for inflammatory pain.

Thats a question for an avian vet. There are no vets here.

I've never heard of canine rosehip powder.
It is never safe to start mixing medications on your own.
There ARE stronger meds than meloxicam available for pain. You need to talk to your vet and tell them what is going on.

Holistic avenue? What is this section for? If you had bothered to read my post I am seeing an avian vet. I have a right to enquire about holistic medicine, just like humans do when they prefer to use something apart from doctor's prescriptions LONG-TERM.
First post and I already feel judged. Is this what this forum is really for? Judging and shaming people who are doing the best for THEIR bird that they are worried about more than you would ever know from your ivory tower of judgement? If anyone knows if rosehip helps with pain please respond to that question. I see other people have felt judged on here too. Not great. People will just leave and not get help for their birds. I know some people don't even take their birds to a vet, let alone an avian vet, so if they are seeking help, help them! I am not one of those people but judgement towards them and anyone else who is trying their best is not welcome or warranted IMO.

I'm sorry your bird is in so much pain and I hope she heals well and feels better soon.

I don't have the answer for you but do you have a link to the product?
Could only find this brand when searching for it.

I honestly would be afraid of overdosing and I'm not sure if there's a surefire way to know how much you bird would have ingested when giving it through water or food.

Though I think I've read somewhere that chili flakes migh help against pain so maybe you could try and give your bird some of them dried or fresh in their food?
But I wouldn't only rely on that on itself.

I second @MommyBird though that the best painkillers are probably best gotten through your avian vet.

Hmm.. I don't know enough about the canine rosehip powder to say for sure whether it's bird safe or not. However, I have a few birds getting holistic inflammation supplements alongside their regular meds! I personally use Biodiversity Bird Blends "Taming the Flame" Avian tea! It contains rosebuds in it too! I also have a powder mix of turmeric, ginger, cinnamon & cayenne pepper that gets sprinkled on their food. Obviously, results are anecdotal with holistic stuff, though it has worked for me! Hope this helps!

I don’t think anyone trying to judge you and I am sorry if you feel that way text (writing ) always comes a across unpersonal

@MommyBird was trying to help and I do agree if your bird still in pain you are best going back and speaking to your vet they also meant be able to give you the right dose/amount for the rosehip you have also got to think if x says this amount and something happens to your baby that persons going to feel horrible when none of us are vets like @Jayced!! as done we can only give you what we have tried for our birds
Calling people judgemental isn’t going to help anybody
People can only give you advise they know

@Jayced!! give you a good answer for pain and inflammation I would use turmeric too if your wanting a more natural alternative

In my defense, I usually read posts from the "What's New" feature and don't usually notice what forum they are in. So I didn't know this had to be a completely Holistic answer.

And holistic remedies are NOT necessarily without side effects. It is NEVER a good or safe idea to willy-nilly mix medications on your own because you don't know how they might interact.
It can be a dangerous thing to do. For example it is absolutely imperative that I avoid blood thinners, so in addition to avoiding ibuprofen, I also have to avoid tumeric and gingko. St John's wort has an infamous reputation for bad interactions with many prescribed drugs. You can google tons more but only someone with training will be able to completely evaluate the risks.
This was the safest and best idea I had to offer.
I wasn't judging Marilyn, although she was certainly judging me.

I have a bird who could use some anti inflammatory additives. How much of the turmeric would be considered safe to sprinkle of food daily, in mg?

You really are best to start your own thread for this rather than piggy back of another’s issue. You’ll get better views and less chance of this being missed.

TBH most things outside of medication are just kinda "a sprinkle" of it! Unless you're pouring the whole bottle in- it's hard to give them too much of holistic remedies. I just take a pinch of it and sprinkle it onto food!
