Amazon parrot care guide:

I have 1 Lilac Crowned Amazon, named Sammy, she was my first large bird as well as my first amazon, she was a rehome/rescue!:)

Amazons always get a bad reputation, but most of them are very sweet and calm. Amazon parrots are mostly green, and have different colors on their heads, depending on each species.

Amazon parrrots are native to Mexico and South America, in Brazil

Amazon parrots are usually sweet but mature at around age 5 to 7 and can be hormonal during this time, but my amazon, Sammy was already past that stage when I got her. Amazon parrots are usually good talkers, they can say many words and phrases, and are very smart, Sammy says a few things, they are very in tune with their owners, Sammy knows when I don't feel well, etc, and she is quiet most of the day. Sammy is the best best I have ever had, and I love her like my own child!:)

Housing needs: Amazons need a large cage, Sammy's cage is a 30x40, and she is out of her cage all day long, unless we go somewhere then I put her up.

Noise Level: Amazons are loud, so they are not good apartment birds. Sammy is very loud, sometimes, especially when she wants my attention. If I am outside and she is calling me, I can hear her outside, and I can hear the sun conures from the mailbox, LOL!!!!!!!!

Diet: Amazons diet needs to be watched closely, because they tend to get obese easily, so a diet of pellets (roudybush, Zupreem, or Harrisons), some seed, fresh veggies/fruits, bean/rice mix, and fresh birdy bread would be a good diet for an amazon, this is all what I feed my amazon, my amazon gets Zupreem pellets, but has been on Roudybush as well. Amazons need a diet low in fat, because they are prone to Fatty Liver Disease. In the wild, they eat fresh fruits, nuts, seeds, and flowers.

Lifespan: Having a amazon as a pet is not a decision to make lightly.
Amazons can live up to 70 years or so. So, if you decide to get a amazon parrot please do research before you get one. I knew the lifespan of amazons before I got Sammy, and I made a lifelong commitment when I brought her home, to keep her forever and never let her go to someone else.

Extra info:

Amazons need at least 2 to 3 hours of one on 1 time with the owners each day.

Blue-fronted Amazon - Amazona aestiva

Thanks for all the info Victoria, it is nice to know when we are doing something right! It also reminded me of spending more time with Chaz but he already gets an awful lot, think he is spoilt. Don't tell anyone!:hug8:

Thank you very much for this information! I have been considering adopting an Amazon so it is great to hear a success story of someone who adopted an amazon as their first large parrot
