Was actually hard to figure out where to post this, if needed do move to wherever!

I often get random question I really want to know the answer to, so here's today's.
I read somewhere recently that someone said White winged parakeets and Canary Winged parakeets are just subspecies of Brotogeris.
From my basic understanding of animal taxonomy, this isn't correct o_O They're two species.
B. chiriri (CWP)
B. versicolurus (WWP)

I've been thinking it's like saying IRN and Slaty heads are just "subspecies" of the Psittacula. That's just the Genus not species.

So am I correct in thinking they're two different species or are they really subspecies??

Yes, CWP and WWP are two different species. The example you gave is on point! :D

I also learnt today that CWP isn't really the correct name for B. chiriri, why are they such a confusing group of species??

I've been under the impression that Canary-winged parakeet or Yellow Chevroned parakeet was the correct terminology.

If you search up Canary winged parrot you mostly get results for WWP. But if you search B. chiriri you get yellow chevroned parakeet.
Also is a page that says it's a common name for both species.
Again why so confusing??

I applaud you for trying to tackle this.

Meanwhile I'm still over here confused by every white, crested cockatoo species :roflmao:

I can ID a citron vs a sulphur crested, and that's about the end of it :roflmao: greater? Lesser? Triton? I dunno. Mines a triton, and that's the extent of my knowledge:rofl: she's white with yellow French fries. Boom. Done.

When comes to those subspecies, I run :p
Wasn't even aware for a long time that there was more than GSC2 and LSC2 o_O
I can name you practically all the black 'too species but I am not getting into the subspecies :roflmao:

For anyone's interest
B. chiriri = Yellow chevroned parakeet aka Canary winged parakeet
B. versicolurus = White winged parakeet
B. jugularis = Orange chinned parakeet, which is what result you get when you search up "Bee Bee parakeet". And guess what? Orange chinned Parakeets do have a subspecies! :roflmao:

What am I even doing? :hilarious:

I don't understand them at all hahaha

Citron is a lesser I think? And GSC2s are just... Greaters, I don't know of any other names. A triton is a lesser even though it's bigger than most lesser but still smaller than a greater...? I dunno. I don't get it :roflmao:

Are there cockatiel subspecies? Since a cockatiel is a cockatoo(ish)?

Colbat-Winged parakeet = (B. cyanoptera)
And

I wonder if there's a good reference book you could try and get? Something written by an expert on these species?

@Xoetix , any ideas on this guys species? :shy:

That, I think, is a golden crested floofatoo - they're frequently mistaken as being a lesser crested but really they're their own species of floofatoos. They range all over the southern hemisphere, and feed their young from the stuffings of pillows!
