I got a few really good pics of Bai Yun the Mama (now grandma) panda that has produced 6 cubs for the breeding program.
Did you know that the pandas that are part of the program (all of the pandas outside of China) belong to China? They are simply On Loan. Their offspring belong to China as well. Bai Yun is 25 and is not producing offspring any longer. 20161227_120203.jpg 20161227_120201.jpg

Cool I think the last time I was at the San Diego Zoo was in 1995 or so. I remember there was a very life like statue of a sulfur crested cockatoo there. The statue was of a particulate cockatoo that would often greet visitors.

I was in San Diego looking for a job, so I did not have all day to visit the zoo. I remember seeing a smew. It was in my bird watching book as a very rare visitor Alaska. I assumed that I would be unlikely to ever see one. I never considered seeing one in a zoo, sure enough I checked the exhibit list and sure enough smew was listed.

I tried charming some of the parrots on there enclosures, but the only one that cam to investigate me was a red-tailed black cockatoo (I thing that was the one, my memory is starting to fail).

The Sulfur Crested Cockatoo was King Tut.

We have a lot of nice enclosures and great animals. Today a lot of animals were out that one may not normally see. I think because it was cool-chilly (for us at least) in the shade and warm in the sun. I think the animals were able to find the temps they liked. We have annual passes (me SIL gets them for us for birthday gifts every year which is Great), so we can go and spend just a few hours if we want to. That's nice because we can just spend some time on one thing each time if we want to.

I've never been to the San Diego Zoo but I know it is a top notch one. We have giant pandas right now here in Toronto as well and they successfully bred last year. The cubs are so cute!

I haven't been there in a long time but I used to like going. Thanks for sharing the great photos of Bai Yun.
