Typical vet price for a culture & sensitivity test?

Hi all,

Main question:
I have a budgie named Blue who has had quite a story of being sick (written below). He went to the vet once, who is an avian specialist. He got medicine, but it didn’t work. Since he is not better yet, I want to go back and have the vet look at him again. Based on my own research, I feel like what he needs is a culture & sensitivity test for bacteria/yeast. Of course I will see what the vet says first, but this is just my guess beforehand. The thing is, that vet visit (which was my first one ever) was $210 in total. It was a lot of money for me to spend on something that did not solve the issue. Blue is priceless to me but I want him to feel better as soon as possible in the right hands.

Since this is my first vet experience, I was wondering if anyone could tell me what was the cost of theirs if they had any similar experience to this. I just want to make sure this place is not overcharging me and if there’s hope for a better price elsewhere. When I call places up, I am only told the base visit cost. I want an idea of what the whole thing might be around.

That place’s costs were:
$96 base visit fee ($62 for a re-check within couple of weeks if needed)
$82 PCR Test for AGY (came back negative by the way)
$30 Sulfatrim oral suspension

And now I think I might need a culture & sensitivity test. Anyone have stories of how much was the total for them and how much I could expect to see?

Backstory if needed:

My budgie Blue has shown signs of nausea through head-bobbing, fluffiness, and low appetite for six whole months now. Based on what I’ve read online, it looks like a bacterial infection which is causing the nausea. It started in October and only lasted a two days, and he went completely back to normal. His normal self includes flying around crazily, singing beautifully, playing, eating a lot, and such.

Then he got those sick signs again in November for a couple of days. Then December for 1.5 weeks. January for a few days. February for 3.5 weeks up to now in March.

It‘s a constant cycle every month of getting sick and going completely back to normal. Whenever I start seeing those signs, I isolate him in another cage and put it right next to my room heater to keep him warm. It seems to help each time I do that, but I want to permanently solve this problem so it doesn’t come back. It has been a long time now and it makes me so upset seeing him like this.

He has only thrown up on three separate days, one in February and two in March. He never threw up before that.

I finally went to the vet in February (I wanted to go earlier but long story short, I just couldn’t do it). I told them the whole story in-depth, and they did a PCR test for AGY which came back negative, which is great. They also gave him a general antibiotic for 7 days, which was sulfatrim. After finishing it, he started singing again - but only for one day. Now he is back to being sick again with two days of some throwing up (not consecutively). He can still fly around, but is puffy and sleepy. He just looks so tired. This is where we are now.

At my vet, prices are the following:
$185.50 for an exam for a sick/injured bird
$80.75 for a brief recheck

For a routine checkup, it is $90 just for me to come in. Your pricing is pretty much the same as mine for tests, etc.

Unfortunately sometimes it does take several tastes to figure out an issue. Birds hide illnesses and many present with the same symptoms.

I hope you find some answers soon!

Prices seem fair to me. 150 exam fee here , re check 75 if same issue follow up. Has taken few different tests to fix issues with mine before.
Really it's the same with my human issues, for my rare kidney issue it took being sent to ten different doctors , then the highest specialist in the state doing conference with several other specialists around the states ..( ok , sucks to be rare , )

Good luck with your buddy! Keep us updated

I appreciate that you are taking such good care of your budgie! Some people treat them as disposable since they don't cost very much at the pet store, but you are investing in Blue's health. It's good that you are asking around about costs and even better that you are investing in his care. :xflove:

Thank you all for your insight, I appreciate it :D
and thank you Tanya for understanding :) way too many people see them as just little birds but these birds are my best friends, big or small. If I have the capability to help them, then I must help them. I’ve been going insane for the past few months trying to help him and I really hope it all works out well soon.

I contacted the vet office to ask about the price of a culture & sensitivity test today, but they said they can’t tell me anything until I actually book an appointment and physically go there first. I really wish they’d tell me ahead of time so I can prepare, but I guess it’s okay as I have no other choice now. I’m hoping to go there this weekend since they’re booked almost everyday. He is kind of weak right now and doesn’t eat too much (a little), so I’m going to start giving him an electrolyte solution each day until then. I really hope he gets okay. Wish Blue luck! ❤

Yes...it is very costly to have any type of animal. I always tell people that want a bird, to do all your research first. Bird husbandry is very involved, very expensive and very worth it!!!! I love birds (all species) so much, however, I also know that if your budget cannot afford a bird emergency fund, it is best to decline bringing a feathered baby into your home. (to me...a new bird in your dwelling is the same as any new addition to one's family).

PS...I wish Blue continued health and love from all of us here! My budgie was named Blueberry! I will watch this thread with great interest! Bless you both!

I have had budgies for 19 years and cockatiels for 7 of those years, and yes I absolutely agree that it’s a big investment. They are 100% family to me. I usually take care of them so well that we have never even needed a vet before. All of mine have been so healthy, with the budgies living 7-8 years on average. Cockatiels are still roaring strong, thankfully. This is the very first time I’ve had an actually big sick situation like this, and so I didn’t know how medical costs usually are. I guess there’s a first time for everything! I really hope this is the last, because I really want my little baby Blue back to normal.

I was hoping to go to the vet this week but there’s no spots available anywhere until next week… I’m worried but the good news is that Blue is starting to eat more than before! He’s nowhere near perfect right now but I am happy to see at least a little improvement.

Thank you so much for the good wishes! I really appreciate it!
