I have slightly long nails and just rip a little hole in the bottom, I tried hole punching them but that failed horribly

For hole punching, you can use either a fine drill bit (if you have a drill press), or I find for small quantities (and patience) - using a punch thing usually used to punch holes in paper for brads used in scrapbooking works (the largest punch option) works too.
